Summer Reading

Summer is an opportunity for students of all ages to explore new books, share old favorites, and read in a relaxed and leisurely setting. The Lower School reading lists are merely suggestions for materials and include a variety of new and notable books and series to encourage students to find a new favorite or try something unfamiliar.

Our goal at KCD is to keep your child reading. What they read isn’t as important as cultivating a love of reading. Hopefully, within these lists, your child will find materials to read on their own, or happily share alongside you or other family members. Remember, reading aloud to your child is still important throughout Lower School, even in 4th grade. Feel free to explore the grade level lists above or below your child’s entering grade level to find books that are just right for your child to read or for you to read to your child.

Summer Stretch

KCD offers a variety of programs throughout the summer, including athletics, arts, academics, and other special interests. Explore our camps at this link!

Classroom Supplies

KCD provides all necessary school supplies for Lower School students. Families are only asked to provide a backpack large enough to hold folders (no wheels, please), a water bottle, and a pair of rain boots to be kept at school.

Morning & After School Care

List of 4 items.

  • Morning Care

Morning child care will be available for students in JK-8th grades on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 7:30-8 am and on Wednesdays from 7:30-8:30 am. Morning child care will cost $5 per day.

We will continue to offer Bearcat Den after school until 6 pm for Lower School students. With the afternoon Bearcat Den hours being reduced by 30 minutes, our intention is that the morning fee will not impact the total added fees for families needing child care from 7:30 am through 6 pm.
  • Bearcat Den

Bearcat Den provides a high-quality after-school program where your lower school child can play with friends, do their homework, and stay active in a safe, well-supervised environment. Children in grades JK–4 participate in a variety of activities, including activity/board game centers, arts & crafts, sports, and outdoor playtime. Bearcat Den hours are Monday–Friday from the close of school until 6:00 pm. Click here to register.
  • After School Classes

KCD’s After School Classes, also known as "Cycle Classes," incorporate independent learning, academics, enrichment activities, and intramural athletics. These programs emphasize opportunities for empowerment and skill-building, the development of good character and positive social skills, and the integration of family, school, and community supports—all in an environment supervised by caring adults. Registration deadline is two weeks prior to the start of the session. Families will receive course catalogs during enrollment periods for these programs.
  • Fine Arts Academy

All Fine Arts Academy activities are open to the Greater Louisville Community as well as KCD students. In addition to private lessons in piano, voice, guitar, strings, drums, harp, and dance, the FAA also offers a variety of classes for children in both the fall and spring semesters, including:

Little Mozarts Group Piano (Ages 4-8)
    Bearcat Singers (Grades 1-2)
    Choral Theatre Players (Grades 3-4)
    Guitar Ensemble (any age)
    Young Strings (Grades 2-4)

For assistance with lesson or class placements, please contact Sarah Stone, FAA Artistic Director, at sarah.stone@kcd.org.
