Last night we officially opened the new Parsley Pavilion! 💙💛 This beautiful campus addition marked the final phase of the Create Together Campaign—a robust project that included the addition of the Meriwether STEAM Academic Center, renovations to KCD’s Athletics Center, JK-8 building, and facilities at Monohan Field.
The new pavilion—which features a concession stand, patron restrooms, three locker rooms, and a press box for Michael Field—proudly carries forward the Parsley name in memory of Jamie E. Parsley. Jamie was a beloved Kentucky Country Day scholar, athlete, and member of the class of 2003, who was tragically killed by a drunk driver prior to her senior (and 13th) year at KCD.
It was an honor to be joined by Jamie’s parents Arch and Kay Parsley, siblings Michelle and Brian, and many of Jamie’s closest friends and classmates from the KCD class of 2003 at the ribbon cutting ceremony.
The KCD community is incredibly grateful for the leadership of the Parsley Family and Parco Constructors Group on this project. Throughout the planning process, school leadership met with the Parsley Family about the vision for the next iteration of the Parsley Pavilion, as we wanted to ensure that Jamie’s legacy lived on in a meaningful way. The family embraced and supported the vision for this new and improved Parsley Pavilion, and we are so grateful!
The dedication plaque from the original Parsley Pavilion is now prominently displayed beside the new concession stand and donor wall. Jamie’s legacy will continue to live on at KCD through the dedication of this building and through everyone in the Bearcat community who knew her.
We also extend the utmost gratitude to the many individuals who helped ensure this project moved forward from planning and design to the finishing touches: Adam Beckum, Gentry Easley, Amy Elliott, the entire Parco Constructors team, and Potter Architects for their design work.

This morning, Opera for the Young captivated a combined audience of 3rd, 4th, 5th graders and invited parents with a reimagined performance of Mozart’s The Magic Flute—set as an exciting adventure on an alien planet. True to the hallmark of an Opera for the Young production, elementary students played a central role in bringing this story to life.
The 5th-grade student chorus took center stage as the Dragon and the Alien Council of Wisdom, performing alongside their wise, three-headed leader, King Sarastro and the Brave Alien. Students worked very hard over the course of just three weeks to learn all their music and staging for the opera! Also featured was Ms. Gillian Hollis, Bearcat Singers and KCD Singing for Stage vocal coach, who returned to the KCD stage as Princess Pamina. This unique residency was collaboratively sponsored by the KCD Arts Guild, KCD Middle School and KCD Lower School. We are so grateful!
Opera for the Young is a nonprofit organization committed to introducing the magic of opera to young audiences. Through engaging performances, educational outreach, and partnerships with schools, Opera for the Young has made opera a vibrant and accessible art form for children. Of the 50 competitors from Kentucky, Samir was the only player to medal—placing 20th out of 400+ players in his division! He is now ranked in the top 100 in the world for chess for age 7 and under. Way to go, Samir!

Our Middle and Upper School choirs put on a lovely performance last night at their spring concert. With songs from The Temptations and ABBA, to a Noah Kahan medley and an English Madrigal-style performance of Wannabe by the Spice Girls, there was something for everyone to enjoy!
During the show, our graduating seniors, Ava Roemer, Searcy Lotz, and William Bache, were honored—and in Bearcat tradition, members of the class of 2025 were serenaded by their younger choir classmates. 💙💛

Second grade is studying goods and services as part of its economics unit. Today, they visited WLKY to learn how producing news, weather, and traffic information is a service for our community. They went behind the scenes to see robotic cameras, green screens, and the control center! @kcdschool #citizenscholarsteward
This morning we were pleased to host Registered Dietitian Catherine Arnold (@friskwellnessky) for an informative presentation on how nutrition shapes children’s growth, focus, and lifelong health! Lower & Middle School Bearcat families joined us to learn about childhood nutrition, hot nutrition topics for kids in 2025, and key lifestyle factors that support healthy eating. Parents came away with practical tips to help their children eat well, feel their best, and thrive both in and out of the classroom.

Our 6th graders had an awesome field trip to the Speed Art Museum and Top Golf last week! As a class project, students proposed this day-long trip for their class. Their detailed plans needed to include the educational value of the trip, a complete timeline, and a full budget for the trip including meals, entry fees, and transportation. Fantastic work, Bearcats!

Last weekend two of our talented Upper School artists were featured in the KMAC Couture wearable live art runway show presented by KMAC Museum! The organization celebrated the show’s 13th anniversary with the theme “Lucky # 13,” inviting artists to delve into the concepts of superstition and good fortune through wearable art. We were so proud to see designs by Audrey (Quinn) Block ’26 and Zeynep Yesil ’26 on the runway again this year! Below, our artists shared the inspiration behind their designs…
Block: “For my design, I found my inspiration in shooting stars. After choosing my iridescent purple and opal fabrics I decided I wanted to make a dress with a train trailing behind to resemble the appearance of the tails shooting stars make behind them. I also decided to do a reveal—having the dress encased in all-black fabric and bundled up around the model’s body to mimic the meteorite before it enters the atmosphere, then having the model reveal the dress halfway down the runway to transform her into the shooting star.”
Yesil: “I based my design on the Maneki Neko—lucky waving cats—from Japan. I have a great appreciation for Japanese culture and fashion, which was the main reason for my choice. The main base of the piece is a traditional kimono, and the fur was added to apply more of the ‘cat-ness.’ The skirt on top was a fun touch, with cat bells. I added a hijab to the piece because I want Muslim-friendly fashion to become more popular, and for hijabi fashion to become more common in general.”
Stop by our Studio Art Show this Sunday from 2-4 pm in the KCD Upper School to check out their projects and fantastic works by other creative Bearcats. 💙💛

We are so proud of our 5th grader scholars for their impressive Honorary Bearcat presentations yesterday! Over the past few weeks, they have researched someone they believe represents the qualities of a #CitizenScholarSteward — a true example of what it means to be a Bearcat. This year’s inspiring choices included artists, activists, athletes, scientists, and leaders — among other noteworthy candidates. Great work, Bearcats!

During lunch today, the senior class had the privilege of attending the annual Matthew P. O’Brien Lecture. This special lectureship honors the memory, achievements, and ideals of friendship, scholarship, and citizenship of Matt O’Brien, KCD Class of ’83, who tragically passed away following a severe illness during his first year of college at Duke University.
This year’s featured speaker, Preston Copley ’03, encouraged students to be lifelong learners while embracing curiosity, wisdom and optimism.
We were so pleased to be joined by members of the KCD Class of 1983, as well as Matt’s mother, Mrs. Jean O’Brien, who, alongside her late husband, Dr. John O’Brien, and her children, has made this event possible for over forty years.
Preston is a proud graduate of Dartmouth College, where he played Division I football for the Big Green, served as team captain, and was an All-Ivy selection in 2006. He went on to build a career in the performing and creative arts in New York City, producing entertainment for companies like Disney and Amazon—on Broadway, off-Broadway, and on screen. He returned home to Louisville in 2020.
Preston was recently named to Louisville Business First’s 40 Under 40, and is a 2025 Grammy Award nominee for his work on the Audible Originals series WORDS + MUSIC. He is a KCD alumnus, a current @kcdlowerschool parent, and a member of the Board of Trustees.
Thank you, Preston, for sharing such a thought-provoking message with our seniors!
