Student artists place in Gilda’s Club contest

Gilda’s Club Kentuckiana recently announced the winners of their “The Write Stuff Teen Writing & Visual Arts Contest.” The contest features art by students in grades 6-12 in Kentucky and Southern Indiana who have a connection to cancer.
Two KCD student artists had their works selected! Congratulations to Ava Hurwitz ’24, who placed 3rd in the 2-dimensional art category, and Olivia Thurman ’25, who placed 2nd in the video category.

Ava’s piece is entitled “Flowers Bloom as Stories are Told.” This beautiful work of art was inspired by her maternal grandmother who recently lost her battle with pancreatic cancer. Read Ava’s artist statement here.

Olivia’s video, “Touch and Go,” features a first-hand telling of her grandmother’s experience as a cancer survivor. Watch the full video here and read Olivia’s artist statement here

We are so proud of these creative Bearcats for their thoughtful and heartfelt work.
