Second graders learn math with toys

Second graders in Keri Williams’ class had a great time learning math during their metric measurement unit. Students popped rubber toy poppers, then their classmates measured the distance with meter sticks. Everyone got a turn to do both tasks. After each round, the group compared measurements and found the difference by doing mental math subtraction. The students loved it the activity and enjoyed using a familiar toy to do math. “It was fun because we got to push the toy and see how far we could get it to go,” said Isaac Miller. Gabriella Roccisano commented, “It was really fun to use a toy during math!”
