Field hockey wins region, makes strong run at state title
Congratulations to the varsity field hockey team, who finished a terrific season with a regional championship and their first appearance in the state championship finals since 2008.
The Bearcats beat Ballard 1-0 on October 17 to win the Region 1 championship. Rachel Thebert had the winning goal with an assist from Bella Kern. Rachel Thebert, Bella Kern, and Sophia Sparks were named to the All-Region Tournament Team. Mary Claire Duncan was the MVP of the Regional Tournament.
The Bearcats continued their strong play in the state tournament, defeating Christian Academy of Louisville (2-1) and Assumption (1-0) to earn a spot in the state championship game against top-ranked Sacred Heart. The Bearcats battled hard for the entire contest but fell short 1-0 in the final game.
Coach Amy Elliott was proud of how the team competed in the championship and all season. “Goalkeeper Megan Read made eight incredible saves in the championship game,” she said. “This group had 11 seniors who contributed greatly to our team, and we are so proud of their efforts.”
Megan Read, Lucy Poindexter, and Emily Harrison were named to the All-State Tournament Team.
