Fifth graders explore ancient irrigation systems

Fifth grade social studies students have been studying the irrigation methods of the ancient Egyptians.  They learned about an Egyptian water pump called a shaduf, which is a water-lifting device designed to assist the Egyptians as they watered the plants in their fields. Each fifth grader constructed their own shadufs and discovered the challenges of constructing a water pump. They discussed modern irrigation systems as well.
