Eighth graders compete in solar car derby

Eighth grade students in Jackie Glass’ science class have been learning about the scientific method through a unit on solar power. The unit culminated in a fun and competitive project: a solar car derby! Students worked in groups to set up solar panels in order to charge their car batteries. Each class then raced their toy cars to see which group was able to harness the power of the sun most effectively. Some cars did not start at all, and some ran for nearly a half hour!
According to Ms. Glass, the project required students to create a hypothesis, design methodology, and collect and analyze data—all while learning to work together as a group! “They had a few roadblocks throughout the project,” she said, “but it was a fun, but demanding, first project for the eighth graders in science.”
