KCD stewardship shines through Ghana Playground Project

This summer, a group of KCD teachers and students traveled to Tamale, Ghana, to help complete a project that’s been in the works for years: the construction of a playground for the Dahin Sheli School. Third grade teacher Kim Kettring has led fundraising efforts on this project for several years. Most recently, lower school students took over KCD’s new playground in May, raising $2,474 toward the Ghana Playground Project.
Ms. Kettring believes that the project provides a benefit not only for the students at Dahin Sheli, but also for the KCD community as well. “I was part of building the Bearcat Backyard playground and the fellowship it provided with parents and faculty,” she said. “When the opportunity came up to build a playground in Ghana, I thought it was a good way not only for the Ghana community to come together, but also for the KCD community to help. This was a project KCD students could understand and be a part of.”

The planning and construction of the playground was coordinated with play360, an organization that provides training to build low-cost, sustainable playgrounds at schools in the developing world. KCD teachers Tim Rice and Julie Riggs-Johnson, along with KCD students and grads Grant Carstanjen ’18, Joy Carstanjen ’22, Jordan Goldberg ’23, Andie Rice ’22, Caden Schuessler ’18, and Veronica Warren ’20, traveled to Tamale in June to help build the playground at Dahin Sheli.

KCD’s work at the Dahin Sheli School proved to be a win for the people there. Head of School Damma Salifu mentioned in a letter to the KCD community that the project showed that the students and parents of KCD truly care about children of Dahin Sheli. The school community there was truly grateful for the gift of stewardship shown by the KCD community.
