Lower school students create and sign community charter

As part of our social and emotional learning (SEL) program, lower school students have collaborated to create a community charter outlining how they’d like to be treated at school as well as how they hope to treat others. To create the guidelines of the charter, lower school counselor Julie Smith met with each class and asked them to answer the questions “How do you want to feel when you are at school?” and “What are you willing to do if you have an conflict?"
Ms. Smith, along with Lower School Director Amy Mendel and first grade teacher Brina Stephens, identified the common ideas in the students’ responses and used them to create the Lower School Charter (click to read). Every lower school student has agreed to follow the guidelines on the charter and has signed their name on a colorful paper hand to show their agreement. Students will review and sign the charter each year.

The charter is on display outside the main office, and we are proud of this visible commitment to creating a kind and welcoming community.
