KCD shines at KUNA

Fifty-six KCD students attended Kentucky United Nations Assembly (KUNA) over March 11–13. We’re proud to report that KCD was presented with the Delegation of Excellence award and won the International Stage Performance competition!

KUNA sponsor Sarah Moran was proud of the teamwork displayed by our students, both before and during the conference. She also was impressed with their leadership skills. “These students’ skills are proof that KCD develops leaders,” she commented.
Congratulations to the following students on their leadership positions at the conference:

  • UN Security Council representatives: Heeba Nazeer, Solomon Blinchevsky, Tala Maya, and Grace Clift
  • International Court of Justice judge: Sharika Singh
  • International Court of Justice advocate (attorney for the contentious side): Shanzeh Sayied
  • Media Corps representative: Amber Ritschel
  • Committee Chairs: Lana Fahsah and Lilly Papalia
  • UN Secretary General KUNA 2018: Nathan Zou
KCD delegates are also bringing back the following awards:

  • Outstanding Ambassador: Cayleigh Winkelhake
  • Outstanding Speaker: Heidi Waterman
  • Outstanding Advocate (contentious side): Shanzeh Sayied
  • KUNA 2019 Secretary General, by popular vote of 1,000 attendees: Aisha Asad
Senior Lilly Papalia felt the KUNA experience was exceptional. “KUNA provides an opportunity for high school students from all around the state to debate and discuss issues on an international level. It is unique in that no other conference allows this geographic diversity across Kentucky along with discussing these important issues. It is truly a special experience!”

Senior Cayleigh Winkelhake agreed. “To be able to present my opinions in a setting where they can be debated rather than simply accepted or rejected is an amazing experience. It truly sets me up for the real world and the plethora of differing opinions that are present.”
