Fifth graders explore ancient irrigation systems

Jill Shoulta’s fifth grade social studies students have been studying the irrigation methods of the ancient Egyptians. They learned about an Egyptian water pump called a shaduf, which is a water-lifting device designed to assist the Egyptians as they watered the plants in their fields. Each fifth grader constructed their own shadufs and discovered the challenges of constructing a water pump. They also discussed modern irrigation systems.
