First graders make music, create instruments with visiting STEAM artist
Tracy Gritton, Rebecca Gallion, and LuAnn Hayes make up our lower school “STEAM Team,” and they are currently guiding our first graders through the STEAM unit entitled The Science of Sound. Gregory Acker visited our first graders on January 21 to help the students explore sound in a unique way.
Mr. Acker is a teacher, ethnomusicologist, and instrument maker. Students explored instruments created by Mr. Acker, including a giant xylophone and many unusual hand-made instruments. The students also picked out materials and hand sawed wood pieces to make their own xylophone.
The next session of the unit will find the first graders in the maker’s space of the LS art room as these young STEAM enthusiasts create their own instruments from recycled materials. The instruments will then accompany them to the music room where they will compose a piece of music using their instruments! Mr. Acker’s visit was made possible by a grant from the Fine Arts Guild.
