Science students nurture a new generation of sunflowers

Fourth graders in Terri Giesel’s science classes have been busy harvesting sunflowers from their butterfly garden. These seeds are now in their 8th generation at KCD, with each grade planting the seeds harvested the year before. Flowers are planted by third and fourth graders in the fall and then harvested each summer. Students dry out the sunflower heads for several months before bagging the seeds for spring planting. Every third and fourth grader will bring home a bag of seeds in the spring in hopes that they will plant them at their home. Students are very surprised and proud of their tall sunflowers!
