Lower School Academics

In the Lower School, we educate the whole child by emphasizing academic, social, and emotional development. We focus on 21st century skills in a curriculum that is challenging, developmentally appropriate, and balanced with time for play.

Small classes (an average of 16) mean that our teachers get to know each child and are able to focus on differentiation. Students learn that KCD is a safe place to challenge themselves, express their creativity, and explore new ideas.

New JK options for 2016

Along with our traditional five-day, full-day junior kindergarten program, we also offer

  • half-day programming from 8–11:00 am;
  • A Healthy Bearcat option that includes our top-notch lunch program and a developmentally appropriate PE class ending at 1:00 pm; and
  • a combined program consisting of a half day on Monday and Friday and full days on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Parent Participation Programs

There are many opportunities for parents to get involved, such as Read-Aloud Time (JK and K parents visit the classroom to read a story), Lunch Parent (parents supervise lunch for their child’s class, then read a story in the classroom), and Exploremore, a parent-led day of activities and mini-classes.
