KCD grad is working to install public art honoring women

A few days ago, the University of Chicago unveiled a new statue in their student center—one of the few works on campus recognizing women. The statue honors Dr. Georgiana Simpson, the first African American woman to earn a doctorate from an American University, and it’s there thanks to the efforts of KCD grad Asya Akca '14 and her UChicago classmate Shae Omonijo. The two third-year students have started a group called Monumental Women, which raised funds to commission the artwork and worked with the University to have it installed on campus. Congratulations to Asya for her work in bringing women’s history to light!
