KCD alumnus, Royal Bearcat Hall of Famer, and three-time World Series champion for the LA Dodgers, Will Smith ’13, was honored with his very own “Hometown Heroes” banner on Tuesday, September 15. The “Will’s Louisville” banner is featured prominently on the side of Grocers Ice Lofts next to Louisville Slugger Field on East Main Street in Downtown Louisville.
The banner was unveiled at a press conference featuring remarks from special guests including Governor Andy Beshear, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg, University of Louisville Head Baseball Coach Dan McDonnell, Rick Redman of Hillerich & Bradsby Co., KCD parent Tommy Floyd of Denton Floyd Real Estate, and MC Terry Meiners.
Will was joined by his parents, Julie and Mark Smith, and various mentors, coaches, and friends from different phases of his career, including his KCD Varsity Baseball Head Coach, Joe Maione!
To bring this special banner project to life, Kentucky Country Day School was grateful to partner with University of Louisville Baseball, John Crockett ’82 and the LG&E and KU Foundation, The Trager Family Foundation, The Cox Family Foundation, Billy ’76 and Monette Beam, Adam and Nicole Beckum, and Jacob Spielberg ’13 and Kentucky Mirror & Plate Glass. We are also grateful to Denton Floyd Real Estate for providing the wall space for the banner and graciously hosting the press conference.
Special thanks to the Will Smith Hometown Heroes Committee, Jeanne Hilt, Executive Director of the Greater Louisville Pride Foundation, Mike Sheehy, President and founding member of the Greater Louisville Pride Foundation, and Kate Bonner ’05, KCD Director of Alumni Relations and Community Partnerships, for their collaborative efforts to fundraise, coordinate the project, and bring our community together in support of Will.
