Students collaborate with Opera for the Young professionals

On Tuesday, March 31, 5th graders stepped out of the classroom and onto the stage for a unique residency with Opera for the Young. The day’s highlight featured the 5th-grade class performing alongside resident professional artists in the opera The Elixir of Love, by Gaetano Donizetti, during a Community Time production.
Attended by 6th-grade students, faculty, staff, and families, the event gave students a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the discipline and artistry required for a professional production. By working directly with the visiting ensemble, students gained valuable insights into the mechanics of a live operatic performance.

The learning continued after school with a dedicated master class for middle and upper school singer-actors. Students from grades 5 through 12 had the opportunity to perform a song of their choice for a panel of professional artists.

In this interactive setting, the artists provided personalized feedback to each student, focusing on vocal technique, interpretation, and bringing believable, compelling characters to life. The session was open to the audience, offering a transparent look at the coaching process and providing a supportive environment for students to refine their craft.

This residency was made possible through the generous sponsorship of the KCD Arts Guild. The Guild’s commitment to bringing high-caliber artistic experiences to campus continues to enrich the KCD performing arts curriculum.
