Bearcats Sweep All A Region 7 Titles, Advance to State Tournament
Tuesday, January 13, was an exciting night for KCD basketball fans! Both Bearcat varsity teams won the All A Region 7 titles in the championship matchups at Louisville Collegiate School.
Led by Head Coach Matt Kruer, the girls’ varsity team earned a decisive 50–37 victory over Collegiate. On the boys’ side, Coach Malyiek McCray ’15 guided his team to a hard-fought 60–58 win over Whitefield in an exciting finish. These victories mark a historic moment for the program, as it is the first time since 2017 that both the girls and boys teams have claimed region championships in the same season.
Individual excellence also stood out throughout the tournament. All-Tournament Team honors were awarded to McKenzie Doss ’27, Shepherd Caudill ’27, and Ellie Beam ’26 from the girls team, while Paxton Byrne ’26, George Crockett ’26, and Carter Suddick ’26 earned recognition for the boys.
With the regional crowns secured, the Bearcats now turn their attention to the All A State Tournament, which will be held next week at the Owensboro Sportscenter.
The girls will take on Covington Holy Cross on Wednesday, January 21, at 10:30 pm. The boys will play Raceland on Thursday, January 22, at 9:00 pm.
Congratulations to both teams, their coaches, and all the student-athletes on an outstanding achievement.
