Advancing with Purpose: An Update on KCD’s Strategic Planning

Dear KCD Community,

Last spring, I wrote to you as KCD began the important and exciting work of creating our next strategic plan. We began where any thoughtful planning process should begin: by listening.

Through interviews, focus groups, and surveys led by our partners at The Gowan Group, more than 1,300 parents, faculty, trustees, alumni, and Upper School students shared their experiences, perspectives, and hopes for KCD. Thank you to everyone who participated. Your candor, care, and belief in this school gave us both a clear understanding of where KCD stands today and an inspiring view of what is possible for our future.

The most powerful message we heard is also the best possible place from which to begin this work: our community has tremendous confidence in KCD and a high level of satisfaction with the exceptional education we provide.

You affirmed that KCD is delivering on the qualities that draw families to our school and make the Bearcat experience so distinctive:

Our community also encouraged us to build upon this strong foundation. The opportunities you identified include expanding pathways for students to demonstrate scholarship through additional advanced, honors, and accelerated courses; recruiting, retaining, and developing exceptional faculty and staff; strengthening learning support; enhancing college guidance; and deepening our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging.

Last week, our Strategic Planning Committee gathered for its opening retreat. This thoughtful group of 18 community members, including trustees, parents, faculty, and alumni, came together to begin shaping a shared vision for KCD’s future. We studied the community feedback, considered the changing landscape for independent schools, and began exploring the resources and priorities that will allow KCD to advance with purpose.

Over the next two months, the committee will shape the goals that will serve as north stars for KCD during the next three to five years. The Board of Trustees will ultimately hold responsibility for monitoring the plan, measuring our progress, and adapting our course as conditions change. A meaningful strategic plan must be more than a document. It must sharpen our direction, align our work with our mission, and turn our collective aspirations into action.

KCD enters this work from a position of strength. The confidence expressed by our community is both an affirmation and a charge. It invites us to protect what we value most about our school while remaining curious, ambitious, and open to what our students will need from us in the years ahead.
