KCD Strategic Planning Launch

Dear KCD Community,

 

As we enter these final weeks of the school year, it is hard to believe that the 2025–26 school year is drawing to a close. It has been a remarkable year across our school. We have celebrated extraordinary achievement in the arts and athletics, and most importantly, we have seen our students push themselves to new levels of academic excellence while continuing to grow as confident, thoughtful, and engaged young people.

 

As quickly as this year draws to a close, we are already looking ahead. Planning for the future of Kentucky Country Day is not a moment in time, but an ongoing responsibility. Today, we write to share the launch of a process that is both essential to that work and central to the life of every strong and forward-thinking school—strategic planning.

 

There is a familiar line that reminds us that if we do not know where we are going, we are likely to end up somewhere else. At KCD, we are committed to being intentional about where we are headed. Strategic planning sharpens our direction and ensures our work is guided by what matters most.

 

At independent schools, best practice calls for a strategic planning process that is guided by the Board of Trustees. This work is also an important part of our ongoing accreditation through ISACS, the Independent Schools Association of the Central States. At KCD, our Board serves as the steward of that mission, and the Head of School works to ensure it is reflected in the daily life and decisions of the school. Our goal is to lead with clarity while offering our community the opportunity to help shape the future of the school we all care deeply about.

 

Strategic planning is how we turn that responsibility into action. It is how we move from ideas to direction, and from direction to impact. Done well, it brings together the voices, experiences, and aspirations of a community to define a shared path forward. At its best, it invites us to boldly imagine the future of KCD and commit, together, to a path shaped by our collective fingerprints, one we can accomplish together.

 

It is equally important to be clear about what this process is not. This is not an exercise in compiling a list of short-term fixes or grievances. It is an opportunity to think expansively about who we are and who we aspire to be. It is about possibility grounded in purpose. It is about aligning our hopes and ambitions with our mission so that we can move forward with clarity and intention.

 

Over the past year, we have been preparing for this work. A key step was identifying the right partner to guide the process. The Board’s current Strategic Planning Committee, in partnership with the Head of School, conducted an extensive search, reviewing and vetting more than twenty firms. We are pleased to share that we have selected The Gowan Group to partner with us in this effort. They bring deep experience working with independent schools, with a strong track record of leading inclusive, mission-centered strategic planning processes that engage communities in meaningful ways. Their approach is both thoughtful and disciplined, grounded in listening, data, and a clear commitment to helping schools translate vision into actionable priorities. Equally important, they are known for their ability to tailor their work to honor the unique culture of each school, ensuring a process that is aligned with the values and culture we hold at KCD. As one school leader who recently partnered with them shared, “The Gowan Group did a very good job of helping us understand our strengths so that we could build our plan around those strengths.”

 

Our process will unfold over the next six to eight months. We are not in a rush. This is work we intend to do thoughtfully and well. The strength of any strategic plan lies in the integrity of the process used to create it, and we are committed to ensuring that this process reflects the very best of KCD. Your engagement will be essential to this effort. In the coming months, we ask that you read and watch for communication from the school, make time to participate when invited, and share your perspective when opportunities arise.

 

The first phase is research, and it begins with listening. In the coming days and weeks, members of The Gowan Group will be reaching out with invitations to participate. There will be interviews and focus groups across our stakeholder groups, followed by a broader survey shared with parents, faculty, alumni, and our upper school students. Our goal is to ensure that every member of our community has an opportunity to contribute and that the perspectives shaping this plan are both diverse and representative.
