A701: Middle School . . . Here We Come!

Designed with incoming fifth graders in mind, this course will help new middle school students brush up on organizational skills and study skills. Students will get the inside scoop on fifth grade requirements and expectations. Note taking, spelling, and writing skills will be presented. Bundle this course with Ms. Payne’s All the Write Stuff and bring a snack to eat between courses!

A702: All the Write Stuff

This course will allow incoming fifth graders a head start on some of the writing requirements coming their way. They will learn the basic parts of an analytical paragraph. Through modeling and revision, they will practice writing an open-ended response using a topic sentence, supporting statements, and a conclusion. They will be encouraged to elaborate using descriptive sentences. They will also practice defining words from their reading and using them in descriptive, contextual sentences. Additionally, poetry and/or other forms of creative writing will be undertaken. Bundle this course with Mrs. Shoulta's "Middle School Here We Come" to have a full morning of learning, and a snack will be provided if you stay for both courses.

A703: A Marketplace of Music and Art

We can't wait to explore with your young arts lovers, and the farmers' market will be our source of inspiration! From making paints using fruits and vegetables to favorite rhymes and garden-themed songs, we will do it all. We also look forward to inviting parents and friends to join us on our final morning for an informal sharing time. Note: Students will need to wear comfortable clothing and will need to bring a simple snack (no beverages, please) and a beach towel each day.

A705: Leadership Institute

Learn the qualities of a good leader and how to implement them in your life! We will learn about the importance of communication, empathy, and listening. Moreover, resilience and adaptivity will be emphasized. This camp will incorporate activity-based learning and will be student-centered.

A706: Just for Boys

This will be a week designed Just for Boys. We will play an assortment of sports and games, including Gladiator Challenges and Water Balloon Battles. This camp will conclude with a boys-only sleepover on the KCD campus on Friday night. (On Friday, July 26, boys do not come to KCD until 6:30 pm for dinner, play time, movie and sleep-over. Pickup is Saturday, July 26 , at 8:30 am.)

A707: E-Sports Training Camp

Esports is now an officially sanctioned sport by the KY High School Athletic Association! This camp, led by the coaches of KCD's Esports team, will teach the basics of Esports. We will focus on League of Legends, the free multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) that is the primary competitive game of Esports. Players will learn game logistics, choosing a character for your playing style, working together as a team, developing strategy in real time, and online sportsmanship. We will end the week with a tournament. What to bring: A desktop or laptop computer (see specifications below); mouse; headset with microphone. No Chromebooks or mobile devices. KCD Upper School students may use their school laptop but will need to provide their own mouse and headset. Each camper will need a reusable water bottle with a lid. A nutritious snack will be provided; dietary restrictions can be accommodated if a week's notice is given. Computer specs: OS 10.8.5 or higher/Windows 7 or higher; 2GHz processor; 1GB RAM memory; video card; 20 GB available disk space. Windows only: support of DirectX v9.0 or higher.
