A701: Middle School . . . Here We Come! (5th)

Designed with incoming fifth graders in mind, this course will help new middle school students brush up on organizational skills and study skills. Students will get the inside scoop on fifth grade requirements and expectations. Note taking and writing skills will be presented. Bundle this course with Ms. Payne’s All the Write Stuff and bring a snack to eat between courses!

A702: All the Write Stuff (5th)

This course will allow incoming fifth graders a head start on some of the writing requirements coming their way. They will learn the basic parts of a paragraph. We will use their summer reading books for reading material, and they will practice writing an open-ended response using a topic sentence, supporting statements, and a conclusion through modeling and revision. They will be encouraged to elaborate using descriptive sentences. They will also practice defining words from their reading and using them in descriptive, contextual sentences. Additionally, poetry and/or other forms of creative writing will be undertaken. Bundle this course with Mrs. Shoulta's "Middle School Here We Come" to have a full morning of learning, and a snack will be provided to you if you stay for both courses!

A703: English Grammar/Writing/Vocabulary Immersion Week (6th-9th)

English Grammar/Writing/Vocabulary Immersion Week (including all-day/lunch supervision and Friday trip to The Paddock Shops for a celebratory lunch) This full set of classes is the most popular option for the motivated English student. Classes fill each year, and students love the full-day experience. Some call it English Camp, and many come back for multiple years of learning and fun. A704: Exponential Expansion of SAT Vocabulary: Rock the SAT! (6th-9th)

Included: NEW BOOK FOR 2018! Vocabulary Cartoons, by the Princeton Review, and ROCK THE SAT, a CD of songs that incorporate the hot 200 SAT/ACT words into catchy, easy-to-remember pop/rock songs (all materials provided by the instructor) This course will involve nothing less than an assault on several professional study guides for SAT/ACT vocabulary. We will engage in a myriad of creative games and exercises that will aid in burning these words indelibly into our minds. The books we use offer excellent visual mnemonic devices, making learning difficult words much less painful than a standard vocabulary text. Again this year we will be using the very popular rock music component! Rock The SAT makes learning SAT vocabulary as easy as listening to your mobile device. I will provide the songs, and students will be able to import them into their iTunes for listening well beyond the week of class! Believe it or not, this class is actually FUN:-). Please Note: Should you wish to enroll your child in both this course and the accompanying afternoon course(s) I offer, I will gladly supervise the lunch hour here at school. A705: Polished Essay Composition in the Digital Age

A primer in the fundamentals of solid essay writing, with an added emphasis on the integration of technological tools to maximize efficiency 6th-9th Additional Supplies Needed: all supplies provided (STUDENTS SHOULD BRING THEIR CHROMEBOOKS OR LAPTOPS TO CLASS ALL WEEK!) Using the tremendous technological tools now at our disposal, we will immerse ourselves fully in the writing process, learning the fundamentals of excellence in essay writing. We will pay special attention to the art of self-editing and revision, which will require students to begin to understand writing as a process, rather than a product. Students will produce at least one and possibly two complete essays within our week of work. No homework will be required, but I will offer p.m. digital assistance for any motivated students who want to work and night to go the extra mile! A706: ACT/SAT English PLUS GRAMMAR

An introduction to format and content of the English sections of SAT and ACT, along with a review of the fundamental skills of English grammar. This course was designed by a middle school teacher for highly motivated/high-achieving middle school students. 6th-9th This course is designed as an intensive introduction to both the content and format of the SAT and ACT English sections, and we will also cover essential English grammar. It is intended to serve the highly-motivated middle school student who wants to get a jump on the preparatory process. We will use the latest edition available from the Princeton Review, covering as much of the text as we can possibly squeeze into our week of study and review.

A707: Algebra Blast! (9th-10th)

This camp is for ninth or tenth graders who have already taken Algebra, but need some review before entering Geometry or Algebra 2. We will spend the week revisiting the basics of Algebra in preparation for the new school year. We’ll do examples on the board, complete worksheets, and play games that will help students review distribution/polynomials, factoring, equations, radical expressions, linear graphing, and rational expressions. This is a great way to get back to math after a summer away!

A709: Just for Boys

This will be a week designed just for boys. We will play an assortment of sports and games, including Gladiator Challenge. We will battle with water balloons and enjoy time on the “slip -n-slide.” This camp will conclude with a boys-only sleepover on the KCD campus on Friday night.
