Mental health advocate and entrepreneur Maya McClendon speaks at x-period

Maya McClendon stopped by campus on Thursday, January 13 to speak to the Upper School about mental health, pursuing passions, and entrepreneurship.
McClendon attended KCD and was a standout volleyball player at Arizona State University and the University of Louisville.

The former Bearcat courageously shared her mental health story—including the immense pressures and vulnerabilities she experienced as a college athlete. She stated, “We all feel emotions differently … the power is really in being able to name those emotions; to feel them and understand how to use them.”

McClendon put her experiences to great use as she recently founded Timeout—a digital mental health platform for athletes that is currently in development. Timeout’s mission is to “Save athlete lives.”

In her talk, McClendon reiterated the importance of relationships and human connection as we go through life’s challenges and changes. She stated, “You can’t correlate your passion and your purpose with your profession; it’s not the same thing. It’s about the connections that you make.”

Thank you, Maya, for sharing your wisdom with our community. We wish you continued success!
