These two students aced the ACT

Earlier this year, sophomore Lorenzo Mahoney and junior Lauren Rawson learned that they had scored a 36 on the ACT—the highest score possible on the college admissions test. Both students had taken the test before, but found the magic formula this last time around.
Lauren says she was “shocked” when she learned the news of her perfect score. “It was one in the morning and I could not process that I actually got a 36,” she said. Lorenzo said he was “elated” when he found out about his score.

Both students had some practical advice for anyone wanting to improve their ACT score. Lorenzo said he prepped by practicing ACT questions routinely. “I did not take any prep courses per se, but a lot of self prep with practice tests and working through questions on my own,” he commented.

Lauren noted that she used two ACT prep books to practice often before taking the test. A good breakfast is also something that was key to her success. “Practice and Chick-fil-A chicken biscuits for breakfast are a good start for improving scores,” she joked.

Lorenzo also shared some advice that helped him out while taking the exam. "Sometimes during the ACT, you will feel overwhelmed due to anxiety and nerves,” he remarked. “The best thing to do is to take a deep breath, reconsider the question in front of you, and put down the best answer out of the ones you were given. Hopefully, you will have an extra five minutes to check all answers you are unsure of."

Congratulations to Lauren and Lorenzo on this outstanding achievement!
