Novelist Tania James ‘99 shares writing advice with English students
Tania James ’99 has published two novels and a short story collection, and we are very excited that she has spent some time this year discussing her work and the writing process with our students.
Most recently, Ms. James connected with fifth grade English students via video chat. After listening to Ms. James describe her writing process and share some insight into being a published author, students asked her many questions about her writing and her interests. They enjoyed hearing about how she comes up with ideas for her stories and about the many rough drafts necessary to polish her writing.
Earlier this year, Ms. James did a similar video chat with Anne Glosky’s Advanced English 9 class. After reading Ms. James’ first novel, Atlas of Unknowns, they developed a list of questions for the author. Some students asked questions about the novel while others asked about her career as a writer and a teacher of creative writing. Students especially enjoyed hearing how the author's intentions compared and contrasted with their own interpretations of the novel.
These discussions were terrific experiences for our students. We are thankful to Ms. James for giving her time and knowledge to help our Bearcats!
