Guidelines for resuming athletic practices

Updated 6/23/20

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) has released guidelines allowing for a phased restart of school-based athletics in Kentucky.
Any updates will be posted on this page and will also be communicated directly to KCD families.

  • Phase 1 ran June 1–14 and allowed for meetings between coaches and players using social distancing guidelines. KCD did not participate in this phase because our coaches were able to communicate effectively with their teams using video conferencing technology.
  • Phase 2 runs June 15–30 and allows teams to work out on campus under strict guidelines, which are outlined below. Only KCD upper school teams will participate in this phase.
  • Phase 3 will begin on July 1. We will follow up with more details about this phase once we receive further information from the KHSAA.
  • Please note that no athletic activities will take place on campus over June 29-July 3. Our campus will be closed that week to allow our facilities staff to work on maintenance and cleaning.
The specific guidelines that students will have to follow in order to begin working out on June 15 are posted below. Click each section to expand. If you plan to participate in an upper school fall sport at KCD, please read this information carefully. Players who don’t follow these guidelines may not be permitted to attend workouts.

List of 4 items.

  • KCD Guidelines

    1. Only fall high school teams will participate in the Phase 2 program. Middle school teams traditionally do not participate in activities with their sports until late July.
    2. Some programs/teams do not participate in June activities and may choose not to participate this year. Coaches will communicate about this directly with their team members.
    3. We anticipate winter and spring sports will be included in future sessions.
    4. Workouts will occur between 8:00–11:30 am on weekdays as scheduled by the coaches of each team.
    5. All workouts will be held outside during Phase 2.
    6. All participants must have a complete and current KHSAA physical form uploaded to Magnus.
    7. All participants must complete and submit this bi-weekly acknowledgement form.
    8. All locker facilities are closed until further notice. Players must come prepared to work out and will not have access to changing facilities.
    9. In order to participate, each player must bring their own water and be checked in by their coach each day. Players who don’t bring water will not be allowed to participate. We suggest filled water containers of at least one gallon; all containers must be labeled with the player’s name.
    10. Participation in these workouts is voluntary. Participation is also a privilege, and players who don’t follow these guidelines may lose this privilege.
    11. Extensive return to athletics guidelines provided by the Governor of Kentucky and the KHSAA/CDC will be followed at all times.
  • Check-in/arrival guidelines

    1. Athletes must report to their designated area wearing a mask and keeping a distance of at least 6 feet from all other participants.
    2. Daily temperature checks and acknowledgements will take place in each group.
    3. Players will be in groups of no more than 10, including 1 coach. These groups will remain the same during all of Phase 2.
    4. Players will be required to clean their hands with hand sanitizer at the beginning of every workout session.
    5. Coaches will wear masks at all times, and players will be required to wear masks at any time they are not exercising. Social distancing rules (a minimum of 6 feet between participants) must be followed at all times.
