Guidelines for resuming athletic practices

Updated 8/22/20

On August 20, the KHSAA voted to maintain an existing proposal allowing schools to begin team practices on August 24 and games as early as September 7. The KHSAA proposal requires approval from the department of health and others, and we will communicate when the proposal is either approved or not approved.

Our plans involve beginning team practices for varsity and junior varsity fall sports on Monday, August 24, and team practices for middle school fall sports on Monday, August 31. All KCD practice protocols will continue to meet or exceed KHSAA guidelines. Our competition game schedule will not begin before September 12 and may be delayed beyond that date if in the best interest of our community. Our plans are subject to change as new information becomes available.

The specific guidelines that students will have to follow in order to practice are posted below. Click each section to expand. Players who don’t follow these guidelines may not be permitted to attend practices or participate in games.

List of 5 items.

  • Home game attendance policy

The state has recommended a three-stage plan for spectator attendance at athletic events, with capacity ranging from 20% in September to 40% through October. Like many other schools, KCD is not able to reach those capacities while also maintaining social distancing guidelines.

As a result, KCD home games are not open to the general public right now–only family household members of the athletes on the team that is competing will be allowed to attend. Right now, we are able to accommodate two spectators per household. We hope to increase that number as new guidance comes our way.

    • All schools, including KCD, are required to screen and take the temperatures of all spectators.
    • Most facilities, including KCD, will not have concessions available, but spectators may bring water or other non-alcoholic drinks. Due to regulations, restroom facilities will be very limited.
    • Attendance capacity at other schools may be different. If you are planning to attend an away game, please check the hosting school’s website or with their athletic office to see what their policies are.
    • Finally, we ask that all spectators exit quickly after the conclusion of the game, especially if there is another contest following at the same site.
  • KCD Athletic Guidelines

    1. All participants must have a complete and current KHSAA physical form uploaded to Magnus.
    2. All participants must complete and submit this bi-weekly acknowledgement form.
    3. All locker facilities are closed until further notice. Players must come prepared to work out and will not have access to changing facilities.
    4. In order to participate, each player must bring their own water and mask and must be checked in by their coach each day. Players who don’t bring water or a mask will not be allowed to participate. We suggest filled water containers of at least one gallon; all containers must be labeled with the player’s name.
    5. Athletic participation is a privilege, and players who don’t follow these guidelines may lose this privilege.

  • Check-in/arrival guidelines

    1. Athletes must report to their designated area wearing a mask and keeping a distance of at least 6 feet from all other participants.

    4. Players will be in groups of no more than 10, including 1 coach. These groups will remain the same during all of Phase 3.
    5. Players will be required to clean their hands with hand sanitizer at the beginning of every workout session.
    6. Coaches will wear masks at all times, and players will be required to wear masks at any time they are not exercising. Social distancing rules (a minimum of 6 feet between participants) must be followed at all times.
