• KCD to Haiti

  KCD’s relationship with Haiti began in 2010, when a 15-year-old Haitian girl named Stephanie spent a year at KCD while recovering from heart surgery. The friendships that Stephanie formed with teachers and students inspired ‘KCD to Haiti,’ an annual service learning trip that kicked off in the summer of 2013.
  
  Upper school students and chaperones spend a week in Peredo during the summer, doing work that connects them to the community. Over the last few years, KCD groups have done things such as help manufacture construction materials and teach art and ESL classes at the local school.

• Clermont-Ferrand, France

  Upper school French students may participate in an ongoing exchange program with the Lycée Ste Thècle in Clermont-Ferrand, France. Our students spend a week in a homestay with French families—often the same families whose students came to KCD the year before. This exchange allows students to build real friendships, expand their French language skills, and deepen their understanding and appreciation of French culture and family life.

• Costa Rica

  International travel opportunities begin in Middle School with the 7th/8th grade trip to Costa Rica. This weeklong trip includes stops at cultural and environmental sites in La Fortuna, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio. The trip also includes a service learning component: students visit several rural schools, leaving behind donated school supplies, basic medical supplies, and new and used soccer equipment.

• Tamale, Ghana

  KCD has developed a long and rich relationship with Louisville’s Sister City of Tamale, Ghana. The first KCD delegation went to Tamale in 2008, and KCD has sent a group to Tamale every year since then. In 2013, we welcomed a teacher and three students from Tamale to KCD for the first time.
  
  Over the years, the KCD community has rallied around projects that support our friends in Tamale. In 2008, the first KCD delegation brought equipment to outfit the TISSEC school’s computer lab. In 2011, the Big Box project filled a shipping container with furniture, school supplies, and other items for schools in Tamale. The Ghana Water Project has funded the construction of six water catchment and purification systems to meet the needs of more than 8,000 students. The Lower School is currently fundraising to support the construction of playgrounds at Tamale schools.

• Leeds, England

  This trip for 7th and 8th graders is in partnership with the Woodhouse Gove School in Yorkshire.

• Spain

  Upper school Spanish students have the opportunity to extend their language skills, their study of Spanish art, and cultural understanding of the Spanish-speaking world through travel to the Spanish cities of Dos Hermanas (Seville) and Madrid. In addition to a homestay with Spanish families, students also visit cultural sites such as the Alcázar, Cathedral and Giralda of Seville, El Prado Museum, and the Reina Sofía museum of Madrid. Students often travel to other cities such as Córdoba, Granada, and Barcelona during their stay in Spain.
