KCD honors veterans at all-school assembly
A crew from WHAS-11 TV was on hand to cover KCD’s annual all-school Veteran’s
Day assembly, which was held on Tuesday, November 11, in the Gardner Gym. Lower
schoolers Jared Frank and Emily Cieminski opened the assembly by leading the
school in the pledge of allegiance. Senior Ben Richter provided a short history
of Veteran’s Day and introduced special guest speaker Commander Jon Snyder,
U.S. Navy (retired).
Commander Snyder is a KCD parent and a 20-year
fighter pilot for the U.S. Navy. Over the course of his career, he
has served as operations officer on the USS Eisenhower during combat
operations in the first Gulf War. He has also served as the commanding
officer of Fighter Squadron 14 on the USS John F. Kennedy, which flew
combat support missions into Bosnia in 1993. During his remarks, Commander
Snyder recognized students with family members who have served in the
military and asked all students to thank veterans for their service.
Following Commander Snyder’s remarks,
the Upper School Chorale performed two numbers, and middle schoolers
Emily Scinta and Kate Waterman read a poem about the flag.
Veteran’s Day assemblies have become increasingly
rare in recent years, and we are proud to honor this day by gathering
together as a community.

SADD club sponsors Red Ribbon Week activities
The SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) club at KCD just
concluded a weeklong campaign to raise awareness of the destructive
consequences of the
use of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs. During Red Ribbon Week, SADD
members distributed red ribbons at the beginning of the week; those
wearing ribbons
during the remainder of the week were often greeted at the door with candy
and other treats. During the week, advisee groups created posters for their
advisor’s classroom or office, and at the end of the week, SADD sponsored
a dress-down day for students wearing red.
SADD co-presidents Molly Shoulta and Aaron Samide
also invited other high schools in the area to participate in the weeklong
campaign.

KCD students take part in historic election
On November 4, KCD students in the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools
held their own elections for president of the United States. Middle
and upper school students
also voted in Senate and House races. A mock debate between the Young Democrats
and Young Republicans preceded voting in the Upper School, and younger students
received age-appropriate instruction from their teachers about voting and
about each candidate. As students voted, each received an "I Voted!" sticker.
Lower School Director Chris Robertson had this
to say about the election: “The election was a success on many
levels. Students enjoyed casting a ballot in a historic election, and
it was wonderful seeing their proud faces as they voted.” When
the votes were tallied in the Lower School, Barack Obama got the victory
with 180 votes, while John McCain tallied 160 votes.

Ninth graders explore mousetrap technology
Mousetrap cars may not be showing up at a car dealership any time soon,
but ninth graders have now perfected the craft of building handmade
vehicles powered
by mousetrap. According to science teacher Kent Martin, the unit challenged
students to apply Newton’s Laws of Motion by creating an efficiently
moving vehicle that uses a single mousetrap as its sole source of propulsion.
In addition to building and testing their mousetrap
cars, students were required to incorporate video and music into a Powerpoint
presentation illustrating how their vehicle applied Newton’s Laws.
Experiment lights up chemistry
lab
On Friday, September 26, students in Bridget Adkins’ advanced chemistry
class participated in a striking lab experiment that generated a rainbow of colors
around the classroom. Students were studying how metal atoms give off a distinctive
colored light when heated or electrified. In order to identify which colors are
characteristic of particular metallic ions, students tested various metal salt
solutions in a hot flame to observe and record the colors given off by each.
