Bearcats Finish Swim Season with Best Times, Farewells to Seniors, and Optimism for the Future at State Swim Meet

Sam Crockett is Fourth KCD Boy Swimmer in the School’s History to Place Individually as a Freshman at State Swim Meet

Ian Thorpe, one of the world's greatest freestylers in the history of swimming, once said, "Losing is not coming second. It's getting out of the water knowing you could have done better." If winning is getting out of the water knowing you did the best you can, then the KCD swim team certainly emerged as winners from this year's State Swim Meet.

Sam Crockett was the only KCD male swimmer who qualified for the State Meet. Swimming a personal best time in the 100 Breaststroke enabled Sam to score individual points at the meet for his sixteenth place finish. This accomplishment places Sam in a very small, elite group of KCD swimmers who have ever placed individually at State as freshmen boys: Bruce Dorman, Will Heyburn, Nathan Abdullah-Mulligan -- and now Sam Crockett! Congratulations to Sam on this exciting achievement.

Five girls qualified to represent KCD at the State Meet: senior Kelsey Hendricks, junior Sydney White, sophomore Ailsa Hoke, eighth grader Erin Stevens, and seventh grader Kate Hovious. Kelsey swam the 50 Freestyle, and the girls had qualified all three relays for State. They were quite consistent in their swims – winning by getting out of the water knowing they did the best they could and just missing top 16 by placing a consistent twentieth. Though the swimmers will most certainly miss Kelsey after she graduates, the young strength of this team was obvious at State and throughout the season.

As another swimmer once said, "What goes around comes around, just like a flip turn.” This year’s State Meet swims were relatively few in number but huge in heart. With the heart of this year’s swim team beating strongly, sixteen new members added to the squad this season, and swimmers like Sam Crockett to lead the way, the future of KCD swimming looks bright indeed.

KCD Swimmers and Divers Cap Season with Numerous Personal Best Times at Regionals

Sam Crockett, Kelsey Hendricks, Sydney White, Ailsa Hoke, Erin Stevens, and Kate Hovious advance to State Swim Meet

The Regional Diving Championships finals were held on January 31st at the University of Louisville. Jason Harter represented KCD in the most competitive region in Kentucky. After a very challenging start with his first two dives, Jason recovered during his next 9 dives to move up to 7th place by the last dive of the competition. The last diver moved ahead by 2 points on his final dive and Jason finished at 8th place with 270 points. Jason’s finish was 40 points greater than his finish at the recent Louisville Invitational Dive Event and a personal high.

On February 1 and 2, Kentucky Country Day was represented by 19 swimmers at the Region 2 Championship Meet held at UofL. Every swimmer had a personal best at the meet in at least one event! Highlights from the weekend included Denny Fortney’s 12 second drop in the 100 backstroke, Cameron Harter’s personal best in the 50 freestyle, and Sydney White’s determined 100 butterfly.

Sam Crockett placed 8th in the region in the 100 breaststroke, swimming a personal best and qualifying to swim in the state meet next weekend. Sam, Barrett Williams, Connor Lohman, Grant Magruder, and Henry Crockett all demonstrated wonderful teamwork and sportsmanship as they competed in the 200 Medley, 200 Free, and 400 Free relays. All three boys’ relays placed in the top 12 at Regionals and set best times for the season!

On Friday, Kelsey Hendricks, Kate Hovious, and Sydney White qualified to swim individual events during Saturday’s finals session. At the finals, each of the three girls swam season best times and scored big points for the KCD team. Kelsey’s time was also fast enough to qualify her for the 50 Freestyle event at next week’s state meet. All the relay swimmers stepped it up, as well, and qualified all three girls’ relays (200 Medley, 200 Free, and 400 Free) for the State Championship. Best of luck to Kelsey, Kate, Sydney, Erin Stevens, and Ailsa Hoke, who will be competing on Friday and Saturday at UofL in the KHSAA State Swimming Championship!

12/12/2007 Swim Team Defeats Ballard
Girls, Boys, and Combined Team all win

On Wednesday, December 12, the Bearcat swimers took on the Bruins in a dramatic dual at the UofL pool.  When the last swimmer exited the water, the Bearcats had almost doubled Ballard’s score:  KCD 120, Ballard 66.
The first event of the meet, the 200 Medley Relay, set the tone for the evening.  Kate Hovious, Erin Stevens, Sydney White, and Kelsey Hendricks for the girls, followed by Grant Magruder, Sam Crockett, Jordan Schwartz, and Henry Crockett for the boys, won by decisive margins.  A the end of the evening, the same four boys won the 400 Free Relay by over 30 seconds, and Shelbi Hendricks and Leah Stevens joined Kate and Erin for an equally dominate win in the girls 400 Free Relay.
The Bearcats finished 1-2-3 in three individual events:  the Girls’ 200 Free (Kelsey, Lauren Schwartz, and Carla Snyder); the Boys’ 200 Free (Jordan, Billy Laise, and Luke Brownlow); and, the Girls’ 200 IM (Leah, Sydney, and Kate).  Some other highlights were team captains Kelsey and Grant both winning the 50 Freestyle, Jason Harter’s come from behind victory in the 100 Free, Sam’s overwhelming wins in the 100 Breaststroke and 500 Free, and the Girls’ excellent breaststroke swims by all those competitors (Lauren, Erin, Christena Burrel, Ailsa Hoke, Abigail Werner, Stewart Cory, and Katherine Eschels).
This victory was a wonderful way for our swimmers to wrap up their 2007 competitions.  The first meet of 2008 promises to be just as exciting; the Bearcats will swim against all three Oldham County high schools at UofL on Tuesday, January 8, the first day at school after Holiday Break.  Thanks to our our parents, siblings, and other fans for their cheers and support.  The coaches are also quite proud of the team spirit being shown by all the team members.  Happy holidays and go Bearcats!

12/8/2007
On Saturday, December 8, the Bearcat Swimmers competed against Eastern High School and Fern Creek High School. Both the boys and girls teams defeated Fern Creek, yet lost to Eastern. Our numbers were small because of other KCD events, illnesses, and other previous commitments; however, the dozen girls and the half dozen boys who were able to compete did so to the best of their ability. Excellent job Bearcats!

Despite the girls’ very narrow loss to Eastern, their swims demonstrated a strong fighting spirit. Some memorable moments for those in the water and in the stands were Kelsey and Shelbi Hendricks finishing 1-2 in the 100 freestyle, Malorie Eichengreen’s personal best 100 freestyle to lead off the final relay, Olivia Alford’s determined personal best in the 200 Free, Erin Stevens’ gutsy 500 Free, Sydney White’s first place finish and personal best time in the 200 I.M., and Brooke Schmidt’s dramatic race to the wall in the 200 Free. Kaitlyn Oates, Karly Baker, Christena Burrell, Carla Snyder, and Valery Kravchuk all had both individual and relay contributions that were noteworthy and memorable, as well.

Grant Magruder, Cameron Harter, Jason Harter, Billy Laise, Noam Salaka, and Perry Fortney were our group of determined and united male Bearcats for this meet. Their efforts were appreciated as all of these boys were asked to swim some atypical events and relay positions in order to support the team. Congratulations especially to team captain Grant, who placed second in both the 200 I.M. and the 100 backstroke.

The team will now take on Ballard High School at the UofL pool on Wednesday evening, December 12. This dual promises to be exciting, as the Bearcats come to the event with their full contingent of swimmers ready to take on the Bruins. Good Luck KCD Swimmers!
