"Bearcat's Lacrosse Teams Win's
the Stickhead 7-on-7 Tournament"
The KCD Varsity lacrosse team began their
fall season by entering the Stickhead Fall Brawl 7x7 Lacrosse
Tournament held at Tom Sawyer Park. It was a 3 to 4 game schedule with
2 divisions. Participating schools included St. Xavier, Trinity, CAL,
Oldham, Male, Ballard, and others.
KCD opened the tournament against Male and in short order, had a significant
lead by the end of the first half and followed through with a win by
the score of 15 – 9.
A few hours later, KCD played Oldham and had a 5 – 0 lead within
the first few minutes of play. The final score was 18 – 3.
Shortly thereafter, KCD played Ballard in the semi finals. KCD dominated
the game and won by a final score of 17 – 4.
The final championship game was between KCD and CAL. KCD was behind by
two goals in the first few minutes which was the first time they were
behind in the tournament. KCD roared back to one of their strongest performances
of the tournament and led 6 – 2 prior to halftime. KCD also scored
three goals within 2 minutes of the second half to prevent CAL from attempting
a comeback. The final score was 25 – 11.
This was truly representative of a strong team effort with contributions
by all players. It’s interesting to note that our veteran defenseman
also scored at least 4 goals in the tournament. Many freshmen scored
multiple times and showed strong defensive skills. The veterans showed
significant improvement from last year and KCD was without 5 veterans
during the tournament. The varsity team was also somewhat handicapped
as a few members of the team played a JV football game earlier in the
day and were not at full strength.
Finally, this wouldn’t have been possible without our coach and
assistants who were consistently mentoring and coaching our players and
the faithful spectators and parents on the sideline supporting the coaches
and team.
Congratulations KCD Varsity Lacrosse Bearcats on winning the Stickhead
Fall Brawl 7x7 Lacrosse Tournament!

4/18/09 vs. Tates Creek
Boys’ varsity lacrosse team records strong win over Tates Creek
The KCD varsity lacrosse team soundly defeated
Tates Creek of Lexington by the score of 16-8. It was a strong
team effort in terms of scoring, assists, ground balls, shots on
goal, defense, and face offs.
David Smith led the Bearcat scoring with 5 goals
while Cameron Harter, Russell Leggett, and Ryan Scinta contributed
2 goals each. Austin
Altman and Michael Worthington contributed as well with 1 goal each. David
Smith’s total equaled a previous high and Russell Leggett has
scored at least 2 goals in each of the last 3 games. It was obviously
a strong and balanced offensive game by the Bearcats.
The ground ball
effort was also very balanced as at least 6 players had 5 or more ground
balls each. Austin
Altman led the ground ball total with 7, Ryan Scinta with 6, and
Michael Worthington, Russell
Leggett, Chase Bennett, and Cameron Harter with 5 each.
Similar to the last three games, Michael Worthington
dominated the face off area and Eddie recorded 7 saves for the game. The
defense, led by Captains Howie Vogt and Bart Hemminger held the Tates
Creek
offense to a season low shots on goal.
The KCD boy’s varsity lacrosse
team has two more remaining conference games with the divisional championship
to be
held on Wednesday, April
22nd against Lexington Dunbar who is also undefeated in the division.
4/16/09 vs. CAL
Boys’ varsity lacrosse team win over CAL firmly places them in
1st place in the Division and a top 4 team in the state.
The KCD varsity lacrosse team beat a very aggressive
CAL team after a very slow first half. KCD led by 5-3 at the half but put on
an offensive showcase in the second half with a final score of 12-5.
David Smith led the scoring with Russell Leggett
with 3 goals each. Russell’s
3 goals are a new personal record and the team is very excited about
his continued scoring. Pierce Hollan also set a personal scoring
record with 2 goals while Stephen Lash, Austin Altman, Michael Worthington,
and Cameron Harter scored 1 goal each.
KCD’s ground ball performance was stellar. Michael
Worthington, Russell Leggett, Austin Altman, David Smith, and Chase
Bennett all
recorded personal bests while Ryan Scinta continued to record one of
the highest totals.
Similar to the last two games, Michael Worthington
dominated the face off area. Eddie recorded 11 saves for the
game and the defense held CAL in the second half to only 2 goals.
4/11/09
vs. Sayre
Boys’ varsity
lacrosse team continues win streak with win over Sayre
The KCD varsity lacrosse team won a close game
against Sayre High School – a top ten team in the state. The
final score was 6-5 and KCD never led by more than two goals.
Sayre’s defense was spectacular and prevented KCD’s
high scoring offense from breaking the game open.
Ryan Scinta had an excellent game with 3 goals
and 14 ground balls to lead the Bearcats. Austin Altman, Russell Leggett, and Stephen
Lash each contributed 1 goal each. The ground ball effort was
also supported through Austin Altman, Michael Worthington, and Howie
Vogt’s efforts.
Michael Worthington was also spectacular in the
face off are as he won 11 of his 14 face offs.
Although
Eddie Crawford only recorded 4 saves, his saves were at critical times
and with the support of the defense
and primarily Howie Vogt,
held Sayre in their last efforts to tie the game.
The KCD Bearcats will next play CAL in a divisional
game which could impact the state playoff schedule.
3/25/09
vs. Covington Catholic
Boys’ varsity
lacrosse team wins second divisional game and maintains first place
The KCD varsity lacrosse team, with the best record
in the state, won their second consecutive divisional game with a
score of 18-4 over
Covington Catholic.
KCD didn’t waste any time scoring and the game appeared to be
decided within the first quarter. Cameron Harter led the scoring
effort with 5 goals with Ryan Scinta with 4 goals, Austin Altman with
2 goals and David Smith with 1 goal. All scorers also recorded
assists and significant ground balls. Michael Worthington recorded
9 ground balls while Ryan recorded 8 ground balls. Chase Bennett
and David Smith also contributed to the ground ball effort with 5 ground
balls each.
Michael Worthington and Alden Dowds were spectacular
at their face off opportunities and both won more face offs than they
lost.
Eddie Crawford recorded 11 saves and the defense
led of Captains Howie Vogt and Bart Hemminger and Aaron Berg shut
down the Covington Catholic
defense and only allowed 4 goals.
3/23/09
vs. Manual
Boys’ varsity
lacrosse team wins first divisional game
The KCD varsity
lacrosse team with a record of 4-1 moved to 5-1 with a strong 10-6 win against
divisional opponent
Manual High School. This
win also placed KCD in first place in their division.
KCD led from the beginning of the game behind 3
goals from Ryan Scinta and 2 goals each from Cameron Harter, Austin
Altman, and David Smith. The
offense recorded a strong assist total as formal plays were executed
to perfection. Michael Worthington and Cameron Harter led
the ground ball stats with 5 each while Austin Altman recorded 4 ground
balls.
Eddie Crawford recorded 11 saves against an aggressive
Manual offense and the Bearcat defense led by Captains Howie Vogt
and Bart Hemminger
shut Manual down on multiple attempts. Aaron Berg also stepped
up to fill the vacancy left open by former senior Austin Geisel and
had an excellent game.
3/7 -3/8/09
Boys’ varsity lacrosse team record decisive wins over prominent
Nashville, Tennessee area lacrosse teams
The
KCD varsity lacrosse team, the morning following a tough loss to Trinity,
traveled to Franklin, Tennessee to play
two of the top
ranked teams in the Nashville area. KCD first beat the former
Tennessee Division II champions, the Centennial High School Bulldogs
11 – 6.
Although Centennial took a 2-0 lead early in the
first quarter, KCD scored 4 straight goals and never relinquished
the lead from that point. Ryan
Scinta led the scoring effort with 7 goals. Ryan’s strong
effort earned him the KCD record for most individual goals scored in
a single game. Cameron Harter scored 2 goals with Austin Altman
and Stephen Lash contributing 1 goal each.
Although the recent Trinity game was the Bearcats’ best team
performance to date, the Bearcats recorded a record 66 ground balls
against Centennial. Cameron Harter led the ground ball recovery
effort with 12 ground balls and Michael Worthington and Bart Hemminger
each recorded 9 ground balls each.
The following day, KCD defeated the 7th ranked
Division I team in Tennessee, the Franklin Rebels, 10-4. The Bearcats’ performance
was a strong team effort with contributions by all players. David
Smith and Michael Worthington lead the scoring effort with 3 goals
and 1 assist each. Ryan Scinta scored 1 goal and 3 assists while
Cameron Harter scored 2 goals.
The Bearcat’s defensive efforts were very strong as they virtually
shut down the Rebel offense in the second half. The Bearcats
ground ball recovery performance was led by Ryan Scinta with 12 ground
balls, David Smith with 5 and Austin Altman with 4. A total of
50 ground balls were recorded by KCD. Eddie Crawford recorded
9 saves in his second start of the year after returning from injury.
3/6/09 vs. Trinity
Boys’ varsity lacrosse team loses close game
to former State Champions Trinity Shamrocks
The KCD varsity lacrosse team lost to the former state champions Trinity
Shamrocks
by the score of 8-7. This closely contested game saw 5 or more lead changes
with KCD leading Trinity at halftime and with 8 minutes left in the game. Trinity
scored two goals by the 4 minute mark and took the lead 8-7. KCD responded
with 6 shots on goal by Cameron Harter and Austin Altman within the next two
minutes left to play that barely missed their mark and were saved by the Trinity
goalie. Trinity held on to the ball from the two minute mark and KCD was
unable to gain possession for a final shot. Many spectators commented
that this was one of the most exciting lacrosse games they’ve seen.
This game by far was the Bearcats’ best team performance
to date. Although Trinity scored the first two goals, the Bearcats
roared back as a result of spectacular goal by Defenseman Howie Vogt
who covered the entire field to take the shot on goal. Ryan
Scinta, David Smith, and Michael Worthington contributed with two goals
each.
The Bearcat’s defensive efforts were also
spectacular as they clearly contained Trinity’s high powered
offense. The Bearcats ground ball recovery performance was led
by Michael Worthington with 10 ground balls and Russell Leggett with
6. Eddie Crawford recorded a record 16 saves in his first start
of the year after returning from injury.
3/4/09 vs. Eastern
Boys’ varsity lacrosse
team off to promising start
Congratulations to the KCD varsity lacrosse team, who recorded a decisive
12-6 win over Eastern in their second game to improve their record to
2-0.
The Bearcats’ performance was similar to their opening game
with major contributions by numerous players. David Smith
lead the scoring effort for the second week with 5 goals and 5 assists. David’s
efforts resulted in a new KCD record in individual points scored in
a single game. Cameron Harter scored 4 goals and 2 assists while
Ryan Scinta scored 2 goals and 2 assists in support of the Bearcats. The
Bearcats offense generated a 3-0 lead within minutes of the first quarter
and recorded a 9-4 lead at halftime.
The
Bearcat’s ground ball efforts were impressive, too as Michael
Worthington recorded 12 ground balls while Ryan Scinta recorded 8 ground
balls. The Bearcats ground ball recovery performance doubled
that of Eastern. The Bearcats defensive efforts were equally
impressive as they held off a very aggressive Eastern team. For
the second week in a row, rookie freshman goalie, Joey Balbach, replacing
injured Eddie Crawford, recorded 8 saves for a new personal record.
