KCD teachers bring arts and English to China
Thanks to two KCD teachers, students at the Xiang-E School enjoyed a week of music, art, and English classes over the summer.
Lower school music teacher LuAnn Hayes and upper school French teacher Sarah Moran, along with Squallis Puppeteers’ Nora Christensen, used Gerald McDermott’s book Coyote to frame activities such as practicing narration, creating puppets, and using classroom instruments to accompany singing and creative dance. In addition of discovering the joy of creating and performing, students also gained confidence in their English speaking skills.
In 2008, the Xiang-E School was destroyed by an earthquake that devastated much of the Sichuan region. Louisville teachers have been helping the school expand their arts program. You can read more about the program on the WFPL website.
Ms. Hayes and Ms. Moran say they’re grateful to KCD for supporting this unique teaching opportunity and that they hope to return next year with upper school students to serve as counselors. These KCD teachers believe that the children at Xiang-E School are the region’s hope for a brighter future filled with creative young thinkers!
