Kentucky Country Day strongly recommends four models of laptops:

  • Lenovo ThinkPad T450s
  • Apple MacBook Air 13"

Frequently Asked Questions

List of 6 frequently asked questions.

  • Are we required to buy warranty that includes accidental damage protection?

Yes. Schools generally require that parents purchase both an extended warranty and accidental damage, and we have found that both are necessary. The extended warranty covers hardware breakdown while accidental damage covers breakage due to wear and tear. Because a laptop has very little internal hardware, the vast majority of breakage or malfunction is the result of wear and tear, which would be considered accidental damage under warranty.
  • Do students actually use the insurance we purchase?

Yes, often. We have found that we repair 15% of machines using the warranty. This is percentage is common among schools with 1:1 programs.
  • If I have already purchased all this coverage, why not buy the cheaper machine?

Warranty coverage is not infinite. Most coverage is limited to a certain number of replacements over the life of the policy. Accidental damage is limited to a fixed number of replacements, and statistically we have found less durable machines may exceed the limits of the coverage.
  • Why has KCD recommended these laptops?

When we launched our program, we found that some laptops were not as durable as would have liked. Since then, we have worked closely with Lenovo and Apple to find a more durable machine built specifically for student use. We have worked closely with SimplyMac (formerly MacAuthority) to acquire accidental damage that works for our students. SimplyMac has developed that coverage so we no longer have to find a third party for insurance. Repairs are done through SimplyMac, who is an authorized Apple service center.
  • I’ve purchased a similar model laptop from another company. Will I get help through KCD laptop program?

Of course! As long as your laptop has warranty, then we can get it fixed and a loaner will be available. If the laptop has no warranty or accidental damage coverage, however, then it will be your responsibility to get the laptop fixed and no loaner will be available
  • I still have questions. Who should I contact to get answers?

We are happy to help with any questions or concerns you have. Please don’t hesitate to contact Roger Basham, our laptop coordinator, at roger.basham@kcd.org with any questions or concerns.
