KCD's Policies on Learning Differences

This section of the Student-Parent Handbook explains KCD policies on learning differences and academic accommodations.

Learning Support and Accommodations Procedures

Lower School

  1. If you have concerns about your child's learning, please contact his/her classroom teacher.
  2. The classroom teacher will then make a referral to Lower School Child Study Team who will discuss the concerns with the classroom teacher.
  3. The Child Study Team will then make recommendations regarding appropriate next steps.
  4. If further evaluation is recommended, we will be happy to discuss the various options with you. KCD does not provide formal testing in-house.
  5. Once you receive a completed testing report, please provide a copy to the school and retain a copy for you records.
  6. If your child is diagnosed with a learning disability or difference, we will work with you to develop appropriate support strategies and classroom accommodations.
  7. At the end of 4th grade, set up a meeting with Lauren Purcell, Learning Services Coordinator, to discuss the transition to middle school.

Middle School

  1. If you or your child's teachers have concerns about his/her learning, please contact Lauren Purcell, Learning Services Coordinator or Lisa Pepper, Middle School Counselor.
  2. Prior to making testing referrals, feedback from teachers is gathered to identify areas of strength and weakness.
  3. If testing is recommended, we would be happy to discuss the various options with you. KCD does not provide formal testing in-house.
  4. Once you receive a completed testing report, please provide a copy to the Lauren Purcell and retain a copy for your records. We must have a testing report completed by an educational/psychological professional on file in order to provide classroom accommodations.
  5. If your child is diagnosed with a learning disability, we will work with you to develop an appropriate accommodation plan for your child based on the recommendations in the testing report.
  6. The accommodation plan will be distributed to your child's teachers and accommodations will be implemented in the classroom.
  7. The accommodation plan will be reviewed each year and changes will be made as necessary.
  8. If you have questions or concerns about classroom accommodations or implementation of support strategies, please contact Lisa Pepper, Middle School Counselor.
  9. At the end of 8th grade, set up a meeting with Lauren Purcell, Learning Services Coordinator, to discuss the transition to upper school and documentation requirements.

Upper School

  1. If you or your child's teachers have concerns about his/her learning, please contact Lauren Purcell, Learning Services Coordinator.
  2. Prior to making testing referrals, feedback from teachers is gathered to identify areas of strength and weakness.
  3. If testing is recommended, Lauren Purcell would be happy to discuss the various options with you.
  4. Once you receive a completed testing report, please provide a copy to Lauren Purcell and retain a copy for your records. We must have a testing report completed by an licensed psychologist on file in order to provide classroom accommodations. KCD does not provide formal testing in-house.
  5. If your child is diagnosed with a learning disability, we will work with you to develop an appropriate accommodation plan for your child based on the recommendations in the testing report.
  6. The accommodation plan will be distributed to your child's teachers and accommodations will be implemented in the classroom.
  7. The accommodation plan will be reviewed each year and changes will be made as necessary.
  8. If your child wishes to apply for accommodations on College Board or ACT standardized tests, please contact Lauren Purcell for application information. Accommodations on these tests are separate from accommodations provided at KCD and must be approved through each testing agency.

General Recommendations

  1. Contact your child's teacher(s) and/or advisor at the beginning of each year to discuss classroom support strategies or accommodations.
  2. Testing should be updated every 3-5 years.
  3. For upper school students, College Board and ACT require that students' testing be completed within 3 years of application for accommodations.
