Prohibited Software
The following lists software that should not be installed or accessed via school laptops or network.
None of the applications below are necessary for any educational purpose on campus. In addition, they can cause a number of other issues, as indicated next to each title. Any service issues we encounter that are a result of installation any of these titles on a student’s laptop will result in that student's laptop being re-imaged:taking the machine's hard drive back to its original state.
All P2P (free music/video download/gaming) software (copyright infringement, spyware, high bandwidth use, software conflicts, and/or corruption of the registry) This does not include iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, Yahoo Music, and other pay services. Titles include but are not limited to:
- Any massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) (Half-Life, Fortress II, Silkroad Online, etc.)
- My Tunes Redux
- Kazaa
- Ares
- Bearshare
- Grokster
- Morpheus
- WinMX
- LimeWire
- Gnucleas
- IMesh
- Phex
- Shareaza
- Swapper
- Xolox
- Warez P2P Client
- EDonkey2
While it is okay to load iTunes software onto your laptop, you may not download music while you are at school. (high bandwidth use)
- Bonzai Buddy (Uses computer's resources, spyware, software conflicts) -- this sometimes downloads from Web sites you visit. Please read the fine print and do not allow this to download
- Comet Cursor (Spyware, uses computer's resources, software conflicts)
- Web Shots (Spyware, slows boot time and system operation, software conflicts, and corruption of the registry)
- Gator (Spyware, software conflicts)
- Weatherbug (High bandwidth use, slows boot time, can disable printing, spyware)
- Games – Bubble Trouble, Icy Tower, Snood and most freeware games(spyware and suspected conflicts)
- AIM causes multiple problems, including inappropriate additions to profiles and offensive popups, and it is highly recommended that students use Trillian instead. Trillian allows you to import your AIM buddy list. It is available at http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/
While students are allowed to load instant messaging software on their laptops, they are not allowed to use any IM service during school hours.
