Reading Materials Assignments

Over the last 20 years, children’s literature has moved in the direction of greater realism in both fiction and non-fiction, and this has been an issue engendering some debate across the country. Schools such as Kentucky Country Day believe that good literature, even at the lower school level, addresses real issues of the human condition, and in so doing, raises discussion, awareness, understanding, and occasionally controversy.

Even in this technological age, reading materials provide the single most important instructional material. Great care is taken in the selection process, and decisions are made in the context of a clear and lengthy set of guidelines. Nevertheless, we recognize that parents may have concerns about a particular reading selection. When that happens, we ask that parents follow the procedure outlined below:

  1. Parents should first meet with the classroom teacher to share their specific concerns, hear the teacher’s response, and learn why the book was chosen.
  2. If an understanding or compromise cannot be reached at this initial meeting, parents may request a follow-up conference that will include the teacher and the department head (or lower school director).
