Henry Vogt Heuser LCD 1964
Mr. Henry Vogt Heuser, Jr., is a 1964 graduate of Louisville Country Day and a 1968 graduate of Southern Methodist University. Since returning from Navy service in Vietnam in 1970, Mr. Heuser has worked at the Henry Vogt Machine Co., where he has served as president or Chairman since 1984. Mr. Heuser has been a long time board member of the Henry Vogt Foundation and has served as President since 1976. In 1997 he co-founded UniStar Services with another Kentucky Country Day graduate, Miles Lee ’85. UniStar is a national industrial group purchasing organization (GPO). Another venture, Grateful Greens, was established last year on the downtown urban land of Vogt and grows hydroponic lettuces, herbs, and edible flowers.
Mr. Heuser has a long history of leadership in the Louisville community and has been a guiding force in the development of many of the city’s civic and business institutions. Mr. Heuser has accepted a leadership role on several community boards, foundations, and civic institutions, including the Community Foundation of Louisville, the Filson Club Historical Society, The Housing Partnership, Inc., J. B. Speed Art Museum, Junior Achievement, the I. W. Bernheim Foundation, The Louisville Free Public Library Foundation, Louisville Fund for the Arts, The Louisville Orchestra, the Metro YMCA, Olmsted Parks Conservancy, and Operation Brightside.
As a dedicated supporter of environmental issues, Mr. Heuser has taken a leadership role in preserving and maintaining Louisville’s parklands and green spaces. As President of Trees, Inc., Mr. Heuser has helped maintain parks and public spaces throughout Louisville; as Chairman of Operation Brightside he has helped to beautify over 130 public sites citywide; and as director and President of the I. W. Bernheim Foundation he has helped to ensure the future of the 14,000 acre Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest. In 1992, Mr. Heuser joined the Board of the Louisville Olmsted Parks Conservancy and has played an active role in shaping the master plan to restore Frederick Olmsted’s 1891 design of Louisville’s great parks and parkways. Those of us who make regular use of Louisville’s wonderful park system have seen the effects of Mr. Heuser’s leadership in action. In recognition of his efforts to restore these historic parks, Mr. Heuser was recently awarded the Frederick Law Olmsted Award for Distinguished Leadership.
In recognition of his outstanding accomplishments, Henry Vogt Heuser, Louisville Country Day Class of 1964, was inducted into the Kentucky Country Day School Hall of Fame on June 9, 2001.
