Students with Learning Disabilities
Each division at KCD works to provide reasonable developmentally appropriate accommodations to students with learning disabilities.
Among other conditions, this policy statement covers Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which are neurological conditions that can result in learning and/or behavior difficulties in a school setting. These include, but are not always limited to, the inability to remain focused, to control impulses, to remain seated, and to remain on task. Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) is a deficit in processing information specific to auditory modality. Learning Disabilities (LD) are disorders in one or more basic processes involved in the understanding of spoken or written language. These disabilities include: severe difficulties understanding and using symbols or function in mathematics (dyscalculia), producing legible/age-appropriate handwriting (dysgraphia), understanding or using areas of language (dyslexia), remembering names or recalling words (dysnomia), or performing tasks that require fine motor skills or movement sequencing (dyspraxia). Sensory Integration Dysfunction (SID) is an inability to integrate information from the senses.
The purposes of this statement are:
-
To outline steps to be taken within the admission process to assure full disclosure of student’s learning challenges.
-
To outline steps to be taken in the event that a learning difference is not diagnosed until after admission/matriculation is complete.
-
To explain what the school can do to assist students with such conditions.
-
To identify the responsibilities of both parents and students.
-
To define the limitations of KCD’s program in meeting the special needs of these students.
KCD reserves the right to adjust the steps outlined in this policy as it deems appropriate under the circumstances.
