Coach Traughber receives new coaching license
Girls’ soccer coach Charlie Traughber just received his National C License from the US Soccer Federation. The National C License is awarded by the USSF following a course run by their coaching staff. The 56-hour course, which has about a 50% fail rate, consists of field sessions, oral exam testing in theory and tactics, and lectures on team management, the psychology of youth players, and the care and prevention of injuries. This new certification is a great addition to coach Traughber’s National Youth License.
“I am proud of coach Traughber’s achievement,” commented Athletic Director Dr. Tim Green. “This shows the high level of coaching he brings to the table. He will do a terrific job in leading our girls’ soccer program.”
KCD welcomes new girls’ soccer coach
Dr. Tim Green announced this week that Charlie Traughber will join the athletic department as varsity girls’ soccer coach. Having coached and trained athletes of all ages, Coach Traughber brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position. For the past two years, he has been the head coach of girls’ varsity soccer at Spencer County High School, where he turned the program into a district contender. Currently, Coach Traughber owns and operates Soccer Shots, which introduces the game to young players. In addition, he is the Academy Director and U16 Girls’ head coach with the Thoroughbreds Soccer Club in Oldham County.
Dr. Green is excited about having Coach Traughber lead the girls’ soccer program. “Coach Traughber is an excellent coach and, more importantly, an excellent person,” he said. “He will do a great job of helping our girls’ soccer program reach its full potential.”
Coach Shartzer is stepping down as girls’ soccer coach
After four successful years as varsity girl’s soccer coach, Sarah Shartzer has decided to step down in order to focus on her other duties at the school. Shartzer took charge of the program in 2008, and under her watch, the team has steadily improved each year, winning 30 games over the last four seasons. In 2009, the team captured the All A Regional Championship.
Shartzer said she has enjoyed her time as coach. “I have loved coaching the girls and will miss them so much,” she commented. “I am very proud of everything that we have accomplished together in the past four years. With strong captains and a solid group of players, I think that the program is in a good place for the next coach.”
Athletic Director Tim Green was happy to have Coach Shartzer leading the team over the last four seasons.“I am pleased with where Sarah has taken the program over the last few years,” he remarked. “We will look for someone who can build on the foundation she established and take the program to the next level.”
Seniors win soccer All District honors
Congratulations to seniors Michael Worthington and Kate Zoppoth, who were named to the All-District Tournament Team for their performances against CAL. Michael had three goals and six assists on the season. Kate also set a school record for goals in a season with nine. Congratulations, Michael and Kate!
Girls' soccer team is thriving in 2011
The girls' soccer team is enjoying a successful 2011 season and is currently on a two-game winning streak following recent victories over Whitefield and Presentation. The team's current record of 5-5 marks the second time the program has achieved a winning percentage of .500. If the Bearcats win four of their last seven games, they will achieve a winning record for the first time in school history!
According to Coach Sarah Shartzer, this year's success has been a team effort. Senior captain midfielder Kate Zoppoth and freshman midfielder Julie Harvey are leading the team on the offensive end of the field; the pair are the team's leading scorers with five goals each. Zoppoth also has a chance to become the all-time career scoring leader for girls' soccer and will almost certainly become the all-time assists leader before the season is over.
In addition to Zoppoth, junior captain Kate Waterman has also made great contributions to the team's success. From her position on defense, she has been the team's on-field leader.
