Football team makes history with playoff win
The varsity football team made history last weekend with their first-ever KHSAA 11-man football playoff win. With the decisive 57-26 victory, the Bearcats improve their record to 9-2 on the season. They now move on to the second round of the playoffs, where they will face the undefeated and #1 ranked Mayfield Cardinals.
Coach Green says this team’s success comes from a lot of hard work put in over the last few years. “This is a great testament to all of the hard work the players and coaches put in this year and in prior years,” he said. “Well over half of the schools in Kentucky are finished with football right now, so we are glad to have the chance to play the #1 school in the state for the first time in school history.”
Taking on the top team in the state on their home turf will not be an easy task for the Bearcats, but Coach Green feels his team is up to the challenge. “This team is playing with confidence,” he said. “We look forward to the opportunity to represent KCD.”
For those not making the trip to Mayfield, the game will be broadcast live on iHigh.com. The game and broadcast begin at 8:30 p.m. EST.
Improved schedule and head coach victories highlight varsity football
KCD varsity football will enter KHSAA District 2 competition tonight by taking on the Louisville Holy Cross Cougars after concluding the majority of its non-district schedule. After six games of non-district competition, the Bearcats have attained an impressive 5-1 record.
More impressively, the first six games of the season put the Bearcats up against much larger schools. KCD, placed in Kentucky’s smallest school enrollment classification (Class A), has defeated Shawnee (Class 2A), Atherton (4A), Waggener (4A), Iroquois (5A), and, in a first-time matchup, Breckinridge County (4A). KCD’s five victories produced over 228 points, while the Bearcat defense allowed only 33 points. The single loss of the season so far was to Carroll County (3A) by a score of 16-14.
These five victories against schools in larger classes easily surpassed the previous season record of two, which was set last year. The Bearcats’ success this year has been noticed by the media. Not only were the Bearcats ranked eighth in the last Associated Press state rankings, but local TV station WLKY also recognized the Bearcats last week as their High School Playbook School of the Week.
Finally, these 2011 victories have allowed Bearcat Football Head Coach Dr. Tim Green to surpass former Bearcat Hall of Fame Coach Tom Monaco on the career win list. Dr. Green has engineered 43 victories and brought two conference championships to the KCD Springdale Road campus since his arrival in 2003. As demonstrated by the current 5-1 record, Dr. Green has proven his ability to lead his Bearcats to victory in a schedule that pits the team against stronger competition. This 2011 season will mark a farewell to Coach Green as he retires from his head coaching position to concentrate solely on his duties as athletic director.
Football team in the WLKY spotlight
Kentucky Country Day football is off to its best start in modern times, so the Bearcats are in the WLKY spotlight as KCD is their High School Playbook School of the Week.
Robert Scholtz featured on WAVE-3 News
Junior quarterback Robert Scholtz is off to a great start this season, and people are taking notice. Scholtz has put up some impressive numbers so far, throwing for close to 900 yards, 13 touchdowns, and only 1 interception. See the video below to learn more about his accomplishments this season.
