Varsity track and field breaks records at regional meet

Congrats to the boys and girls track teams as both teams represented well in the Region 3 Class 1A meet at Fort Knox on May 27, finishing fourth overall. Tough winds and lightning threatened to cancel the meet, as it was delayed almost two hours before the first event took place. But that did not slow down the Bearcats, who saw top season performances from all of their athletes.

Highlights from the meet include state qualifiers Healey Loeffler, Reed Cohen, Sam Summers, and Malorie Eisenbrei. Loeffler placed second in the shot put and first in the discus, breaking the school record with an amazing throw of 97-00 feett. Summers broke the 100 meter school record with a lightning fast time of 11.03 seconds, and also qualified for state in the 200 meter dash. Cohen will represent KCD in the discus and shot put at state as he had no problems winning either event, and he is ranked #1 in the state in the discus. Eisenbrei will represent KCD at state in the 400 meter dash, as she placed third in the region with a time of 1:04.49.

The state meet will be held at the University of Louisville’s Cardinal Park on Saturday morning. The first event begins at 8:00 a.m. Congratulations team and good luck at state!

Gold wins regional singles title

Congratulations to Maks Gold on his third regional singles title. He will head to the state tournament next week and looks to do quite well. The boys’ tennis team finished the tournament as regional runners-up, losing to Trinity by only one point. The regional team of Maks, Collier Bouchillon, Daniel Mark, Jacob Lazarus, Geoffrey Jeyasingham, and Daniel Greene represented KCD very well.

In addition to Maks, Daniel Mark and Jacob Lazarus will compete next week in the state doubles tournament. The tournament will be held at UK next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Congratulations, and good luck at state!

Bearcats host free football clinic

On Saturday, May 22, Coach Tim Green and the varsity football team, along with Velocity Sports, put on a free football clinic for fourth through eighth graders in the Louisville community. The campers were taught basic football drills as well as speed and agility concepts during the camp. Former college and professional athletes were instructors at the camp, and signed autographs for the kids at the end of the day. Nearly 120 kids from over forty area schools attended the clinic.

Those that helped the KCD Staff included ex-University of Louisville players Stefan LeFors, Justin Rascatti, Preston Smith, Chad Pinkston, and Jason Hilliard; ex- University of Kentucky quarterback Andre Woodson; and former Louisville Fire coach Tommy Johnson.

Girls' lacrosse team captures state championship!

Last evening, the varsity girls’ lacrosse team defeated rival Collegiate to capture its second state championship by a final margin of 5-2. The hotly contested affair was truly a tale of two halves, as the Bearcats fought back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to shut out the Amazons in the second half behind two goals from senior All-American Michelle Worthington.

The first half saw the normally-high scoring Bearcats continually stymied by the stout Collegiate defense, which was strategically packed back in a tightly configured zone. It was actually the first time KCD (who had gone 11-0 in regular season league games while outscoring opponents 184-49), had been shut out in a half since they played a national powerhouse from Ohio three years ago. Instead of panicking, however, the Bearcats dug in their heels and slowly found a way to get the offense moving. According to senior defender Lauren Adams, “We played a really sloppy first half and knew that if we didn’t play smarter, we were not going to get the job done. In the second half, we started playing together and doing what our coaches wanted and we turned it around.”

Worthington finally got the Bearcats on the board about nine minutes into the half with additional goals coming from Ellen Esterhay, Caroline Flowers, Mimi Magruder, and another from Worthington. In the second half, the Bearcats dominated possession and put on a defensive clinic led by senior goalie Laura “Soupy” Campbell, who was named Tournament MVP after posting seven saves and giving up the fewest goals in the history of a championship game.

It was a fitting ending to a storybook season for the Bearcats, who finished with a program-best mark of 21-3 with all three losses coming to out-of-state teams by one-goal margins. KCD entered the tournament as the top seed, having not lost a regular season league game since April of 2006 while going 45-0-2 over that time. The team was led by a remarkable group of fifteen seniors, a few of whom had been on the varsity team since middle school. These seniors are the group most responsible for putting KCD girls lacrosse on the map, leading the Bearcats to an incredible streak of five consecutive championship games.
