First graders hone their skill with structures
First graders are currently studying structures, and last week they welcomed a special guest who shared his professional experience as an architect. Casey Kuffner, father of first grader Hugh Kuffner and architect for Papa John’s, talked with students about his job and his experience working with structures. He also gave first graders some tips on the structures they were building as part of their unit.
Students used straws to create their own structures, which came in a variety of forms: big, tall, wide, and small! Following the completion of the project, parents were invited to visit first grade classrooms to see the creative projects their children had constructed.

Third graders construct geopanes
Third graders in Ms. Nevels' class have been learning about vertices, segments, and faces during their study of geometry. In order to investigate these concepts in a concrete way, students used gum drops and toothpicks to create a variety of three-dimensional shapes.
Next, they dipped those shapes into soapy water to create faces for each polyhedron. Students collected data about their polyhedron to prove Euler’s Theorem: Vertices + Faces ‒ Edges = 2. The students had a great time with this hands-on project.

Psychology students visit Lower School
Seniors in David Apel’s AP Psychology class recently took a trip to the Lower School to visit with junior kindergartners in Janey Andris’ class. This activity was part of the human development unit in the Psychology curriculum. The unit focuses on our intellectual, mental, and social development of children and adults. The students also participated in activities with second graders and eighth graders.
Mr. Apel’s students have been studying theories of child psychologists such as Jean Piaget, Erik Erikson, Lawrence Kohlberg, and Mary Ainsworth. The upper school students’ activities and observations with the younger students allowed them to bring these theories to life!
Ninth grade students display religion guidebooks
Ninth grade world history students recently completed a religion guidebook assignment, which described the histories and current roles of six major religious faiths. On the completion of their assignments, the students presented their guidebooks to inquisitive third grade students.
The third grade will soon study the continents in an upcoming unit, and the religion guidebook presentations helped to introduce the various faiths practiced around the world. The upper and lower school students had an enjoyable time sharing knowledge and candy treats.
