Second graders learn about Native America
Today, second graders enjoyed a fun-filled day in which they participated in arts and crafts while learning about Native American culture. The students got their hands dirty using paint, glue, clay, and glitter as they created an art project featuring a coyote. The Native American studies presentation, which was put on by Barbara Hodge of Barbara’s Crafty Tales, included a display of over forty Native-made items from many of our country’s tribes.

Incredible edible orbits
Second grade students in Ms. Giesel's science resource class used their imagination to create edible orbits. Learning about the solar system, students used sweet treats to create their own individual solar system models. The students used materials ranging from jawbreakers to skittles to butterscotch discs. Icing was used to hold the planets in place. The students were able to enjoy eating the leftover candy and icing after their projects were complete.
First and second grade students enjoy string quartet
A string quartet from the Louisville Orchestra visited KCD on Monday January 11 to perform in an assembly for first and second grade students. This assembly served as a wonderful preview of the orchestra's OrKidstra Concert on Saturday, January 16. In addition to individual visits to the second grade classrooms, the members of the string quartet highlighted a variety of pieces to be played by the full orchestra. Louisville Orchestra Education Director, Deborah Moore, also used engaging movement exercises and games to direct the listening of our wonderful young audience members. One hundred sixty KCD parents and children will join Ms. LuAnn Hayes for a family field trip to Saturday's OrKidstra Concert at the Brown Theatre.
