Eighth graders present class quilt
During the eighth grade Transition Day ceremony on Wednesday, June 2, the student council presented the class quilt. The class quilt is a tradition of the eighth grade class as each student is represented on the quilt with something that is significant to their lives and to their KCD experience.
Eighth graders enjoy French sleepover
Last week, French teachers Julie Riggs-Johnson and Jean Amick hosted the first-ever sleepover for eighth grade French students. Eighteen girls from Ms. Riggs-Johnson’s French classes spent Friday night at KCD enjoying French-themed food and activities.
After a dinner of crepes and baguettes, students played games such as Connect Four and Twister in French. Thanks to Ameenah Ikram, students enjoyed a storytelling session that included actors bringing the story to life. Finally, students watched the movies Ratatuille and Les Choristes before falling asleep in the library. Before going home the next morning, students enjoyed a breakfast of croissants, Nutella, and Belgian waffles. Thanks to Ms. Riggs-Johnson and Ms. Amick for chaperoning this event!
Eighth graders present endangered species projects
On Tuesday, March 6, eighth graders completed their project on endangered species with formal presentations on their research of animals from around the world. The presentations were given in front of classmates as well as a panel of teachers and parents. Students had to give a persuasive argument as to why their species needed to be protected and preserved and to explain the steps they would take to make it happen. The six most persuasive students had the honor of presenting their reports in front of the whole eighth grade class.
Eighth grade boys’ basketball finishes record-setting season as champions
Congratulations to the boys’ eighth grade basketball team on winning the Anchorage Invitational Tournament on Saturday, February 6. The team handled Collegiate 49 -19 in the semifinals and then outlasted Anchorage in the championship game by a score of 39-25. The Bearcats finished the season on a six-game winning streak to finish with a 20-6 record. This is the first twenty-game-winning season in KCD middle school basketball history! Congratulations to Coach Mark Smith and the eighth grade Bearcats!
Students perform for assisted living residents
On Tuesday, January 5, the seventh and eighth grade dance elective class performed at The Episcopal Church Home on Westport Road. This is the second time that the class has performed for the residents at ECH. Performances by Kentucky Country Day school are very popular with the residents and are usually performed to a "full house" in their Gheens Town Hall.
On Wednesday, January 6, the fifth and sixth grade Play Production class performed their play Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for the residents. KCD and ECH have several connections: Ms. Trudy Wheeler's mother lives there as well as Mr. Paul Amick's mother. Several students have grandparents and great-grandparents living there. There is a graduate of Kentucky Home School who comes to all the shows, meets the students, and tells them her graduation year! It gives the students a chance to perform off campus and it is a great community service opportunity!
Earlier this semester, the cast of Aladdin, Jr. performed the entire show for residents. The cast and crew were a huge success. All of the residents enjoyed not only the singing and dancing, but the colorful costumes as well.
Eighth graders have fun with unconventional scavenger hunt
On Tuesday, December 15, Jane Lyman’s eighth grade Spanish students went on an unconventional scavenger hunt using their cell phones. Ms. Lyman texted clues to students in Spanish directing them to a place or item that she wanted them to photograph. Students worked in small groups and simply followed her directions. The students would text back in Spanish when they were ready for the next clue.
Ms. Lyman’s clues sent the kids all over campus and in all of KCD’s buildings. Next, they will assemble their photos into a Power Point presentation with Spanish captions describing where they went and what they photographed. The students loved this project! Having the privilege of using their cell phones and text messages during class really engaged them!
Eigth grade boys' basketball wins Roundball Classic championship
The KCD eighth grade boys' basketball team defeated Anchorage 45-40 last night to win the 19th Annual Roundball Classic hosted by Our Savior Lutheran School. KCD defeated the West End School, coached by former KCD Headmaster Robert Blair, 34-30 in the semi-final round. Bearcats Jared Liebman and Zach Lyles were named to the All Tournament Team. Lyles was also selected Tournament MVP.
“The championship was made possible by the guys taking great pride in their defense and rebounding," commented Coach Mark Smith. "Each game, two or three different people stepped up and played big roles on both ends of the floor. It was a great performance every game of the tournament by all the guys that made this championship possible.” The team has an impressive 11-5 record so far this season. Congratulations to Coach Smith and the Bearcats!
