Field hockey team captures district title!
On Wednesday, October 17, KCD avenged two previous regular season losses to Ballard with a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over its district nemesis. The win allowed the Bearcats to repeat as District One Champions and brought their season record to 19 wins, 7 losses, and 1 tie.

The girls played a phenomenal first half, scoring three goals and dominating play. However, the Bruins fought back, scoring one goal in the first half and two more in the second, to tie the game with about one minute left to play. Although tired and wounded, the Bearcats scored quickly in overtime to win the game!

Gray Robinson not only scored the game-winning goal in overtime, but also scored during regulation play. She also had two assists. Paige Henry and Christy Chapman both added a goal for the Bearcats. Sarah Anderson had a tremendous game in goal, and the entire team played a great game. Gray Robinson, Christena Burell, and Paige Henry earned All District Team Honors.

On Saturday, October 20, the Bearcats will take on CAL in the quarterfinals of the state tournament at 11:00 a.m. at KCD. At 1:00, Collegiate will play Manual at KCD; the winner of those two games will play at 7:00 on Monday at U of L’s Trager Field. Come out and support the Bearcats as they fight for the state title!

KCD records fall as Bearcats win district
Two long-standing KCD athletic records have fallen as the Bearcat field hockey team enters the state tournament. Seniors Christena Burell and Gray Robinson have broken records held by former KCD All-American Cindy Lunsford. Christena’s 32 goals and Gray’s 23 assists have shattered Lunsford’s records of 28 season goals (1989) and 21 season assists (1991).

Both of these seniors will be playing Division 1 NCAA field hockey next year. Christena has committed to Miami of Ohio, and Gray has commited to Davidson College.

Meanwhile, the KCD goal count continues to grow. The Bearcats have already surpassed the previous record of 102 season goals (set in 2003) by scoring 116 team goals so far in the 2007 season.

This Sunday, the varsity boys' soccer team fought their way through a pair of tough, nerve-wracking games to emerge victorious as Class A State Champions!

The Bearcats earned their spot in the semifinals by defeating St. Patrick's 4-1 on Saturday. Goals were scored by Sam Brown, Daniel Mark, and Emery Waddell (2).

The semifinal game against Danville was scoreless at the end of regulation play, sending the team to a nail-biting shootout, where the boys outscored their opponents 5-4.

Facing Lexington Christian Academy in the final game, the Bearcats again faced a tied game at the end of regulation play. The game came down to penalty kicks, and goalie Brandon Geer proved the decisive factor by blocking two of LCA's scoring attempts. The Bearcats outshot their opponents 4-3 to claim their first state title since 1977.

Brandon was named the Tournament MVP and was named to the All Tournament Team along with Lee Dorsey, Andrew Jones, and Alexander Blieden.

According to Coach Davis, this state championship "was the culmination of four years of selfless work on the part of these senior players. These athletes found their passion and dedicated themselves to it."

Boy's golf team makes school history by capturing seventh region title
For the first time in school history, the KCD boy's varsity golf team has won the All A Regional tournament title! Will Hatfield was the tournament individual medalist with a one over par, and Jack Heyburn tied for second with score of three over par. Other team members included Howie Vogt and middle school golfers Will Smith and Mac Telle. On Friday, September 14, the team will travel to Richmond to compete in the state tournament. Congratulations to these athletes on this accomplishment.

Boys' soccer team defeats Bruins 4-1
For the first time in KCD history, the Bearcats have knocked off soccer powerhouse Ballard, triumphing over the visiting Bruins by a decisive 4-1 margin.

Before the game, the team received a pep coach from legendary KCD soccer coach Doug Delafield, who tenure at KCD from 1973–1984 included two state championship teams in 1975 and 1977. Mr. Delafield spoke to the varsity team during pregame, providing words of encouragement and inspiration. The lads responded and found themselves victorious at the end of regulation. Daniel Mark and super-sub David Giesel each scored two goals.

Air conditioning to be installed in Gardner Gym
Thanks for a generous supporter of the school, those hot afternoons and evenings in the Gardner Gymnasium will soon be a thing of the past! The installation of a new air conditioning system for the Gardner Gym is currently underway and will be completed later this fall. The addition of this cooling system will be the final step in the renovation of KCD's larger gym, which over the last few years has seen the installation of a new wood floor, new bleachers, and the addition of athletic banners commemorating KCD's championship teams.

Coach Maione reaches 100-win milestone
Congratulations to baseball head coach Joe Maione, who last spring became the most recent KCD head coach to reach the milestone of 100 varsity wins. Coach Maione's baseball team won 16 games last spring to place him at the 104 victory mark.

Previous coaches in the 100 Victory Club include Valerie Dawson Vertrees with 236 wins (field hockey), John Filar with 150 (girls’ basketball), Mark Samide with 140 (boys’ basketball), Debbie Klotz with 112 (girls’ gymnastics), Arron Davis with 111 (boys’ soccer), and Laura Robb Coleman with 109 (girls’ volleyball). All 100 Varsity Victory Head Coaches’ names are posted in the Bearcat Athletic Gallery in the hallways adjacent to the Gardner Gymnasium.
