Financial Aid
Recognizing that the cost of an independent school education may be beyond
the means of the families of some well-qualified candidates, Kentucky Country
Day
School annually allocates a portion of its budget to help defray the tuition
expenses of those families who would not otherwise be able to afford tuition.
Consequently, all families are encouraged to consider KCD for their children.
The
family bears the primary responsibility to finance the child’s
education. Parents have an obligation to pay for the educational expense
of their children
to the extent of their ability.
The Purpose of Offering Financial Aid
KCD uses its financial aid program to attract well-qualified students
regardless of the family’s ability to pay tuition. Approximately
17% of our students receive some award, with an average grant of $10,455.
Approximately $1.7 million
in aid was awarded for the 2008–2009 school year.
KCD’S Policy Regarding
Financial Aid
All financial aid funds are awarded on a demonstrated need basis and
are not associated with academic or athletic achievement. The family
of any student,
either currently enrolled or applying for admission, may request financial
aid. All awards are given on an annual basis; therefore, families of returning
students
must reapply every year.
Applying for Financial Aid
Families applying for financial aid must note that fact on the Application
for Admission. Families will receive their financial aid packet in February
along
with their child’s notification of acceptance. It is important to complete
the financial aid application as soon as possible. The deadline for the financial
aid application is March 31.
The Financial Aid Office also requires a copy
of the parents’ most recent
1040 tax form, along with all accompanying schedules and W-2 forms, for all
members of the family who are employed.
Separated, Divorced, or
Remarried Parents
In considering applications for financial assistance, the matter of divorce
or separation of parents is a difficult one. It is KCD’s policy to
determine the financial need of students based on the principle that both
parents are responsible
for the support and educational expenses of their children. That principle
applies to all parents, including those who are separated or divorced. The
school will
consider the assets of both natural parents before making any award and cannot
be bound by the assertion that one parent has disclaimed responsibility for
educational expenses. If either parent has remarried, we will also consider
the assets of
the stepparent, always bearing in mind the obligation of the stepparent to
his or her own natural children.
Parents should recognize their responsibility
to provide for their children’s
educational expense. It is necessary for both natural parents and their
current spouses, if any, to fill out a financial aid application. If information
from both custodial and non-custodial parents is not provided, the Financial
Aid Committee
will be unable to consider the family’s request for aid.
Financial
Aid Decisions
The processes of applying for admission and financial aid are entirely
independent of one another. In no way does a request for financial aid
affect a student’s
eligibility for admission. Decisions about financial aid, however, will
be made only for those students who have been admitted to the school
and only after the
Admission Office has received all the necessary forms to complete a financial
aid request.
Notification Dates
Families who have completed the admission process for their children
by February 1 will be notified by mid-February of the school’s
decision regarding their child’s acceptance to the school. They
will have until March 5 to accept the school’s offer of enrollment.
Those parents also applying for financial aid will be asked to return
a “letter of intent to enroll,” rather
than an enrollment contract.
Notification of financial aid awards will
be made after April 1 if the financial aid file is complete, at which
time enrollment contracts will
be issued.
A family is under no financial obligation to KCD until they return
a signed enrollment
contract.
